Is there NTSC & PaL DVD-ROM's?? & if so , does the firmware patch need to reflect that???

I am planning flash my sony 16x dvd.. a couple of points i want to clarify... I hv read all post for flashing sony 16x, but i am configused... what ver of fw to use???
1. My firmware is 1.5, so should i use s1p6 or s16, i belive s16 is official fw????
2.the file in s1p6 are sufficient to flash or should i get the fl*.bat file whcih i hv seen some post on that????.
3.if something gets [*Profanity*] can i put back the original formware????.. i think i hv to change the filename in the upgrade.bat file to reflect the backup files...
plz... let know, who has flashed with s1p6 is it working fine???? and what steps they followed to flash....

hi etna...
I did the follwoing to flash:
used s1p6 fw, and dvd as secondary-slave, removed all other ide devices. Booted with boot floppy as u mentioned.
I saw couple of times the status counter running..... at last i got OK... looks like it went well. Rebooted the machine, dvd was recognised.
Ran dvdinfo, it should as no region protection!!!.
couple of points to clarify....
1. without running region-killer, i was able to run region 3 dvd, but inbetween it was getting struck!!!!. dvdinfo shows, it is region free...
2.Ran region killer, was able to run region 3 dvd, but still the movie was getting struck/hang... has to kill powerdvd and restart the whole. now dvdinfo shows that it has region protection..... even reinstalled powerdvd... but its the same....
want to the process i followed was right????? why the dvd get struck/hangs!!!!

That cdvdinfo shows a locked drive with active region killer 2 is normal. You must disable RK2 before you test the drive (Globe must be red)
I don`t know why the drive stucks. Try also S1p5.

Checked the scratched dvd with checkcd, got crc error... may be this was the problem!!!!!...

Like another gent below..I have used the Sony 1621 1.6 firmware flash apparently successfully by the feedback from the flash program..but the drive still is region locked, but the regions are "not permanent". Any comments by the professionals?

@crarey you have installed the original version. Use S1p6 not S1.6
@cliff
Also with a RPC1 drive the player ask for region change. You need to install region killer2 (in Automatic mode) or you must reset your Player after 4 changes with DVD Genie

It was clear at the begining of the thread but become confuse after a while! LOL
Anyway, you guys are very helpfull so may be a little post to resume the situation and the procedure with the correct files would be great. just my .2 cts
So, according to this, here is what i suggest. As i said previously, it's not intended to [*oops*] off anyone, just to make things clear and permit to flash in good conditions
Feel free to edit my message so only good and reliable infos would be concentrated in this post...
Sony DDU -1621
Files to download:

Official Firmware patch S1.6 : is it needed? only for the Upgrade.bat?

RPC-1 S1p6 : the patched firmware file to permit all region (region free).

Boot disk: Win_Me boot disk (Win all)
The procedure:
Prepare the bootdisk

Prepare a classical bootdisk either with the Win_me.exe downloaded above or create a bootdisk in XP with Format/create a Ms_Dos startup disk?

copy Idediag.exe to be sure that your DVDRom is on 2nd master

extract file xxx from the S1.6 and yyy from RPC-1 S1p6
Preparation of the hardware

Disconnect everything except the dvdrom (HD is an IDE so are u sure you have to disconnect it? mean not sure... )

Reboot onto bootdisk
Upgrade the Bios

What to run after booting on the boot disk? MTKFLASH then Upgrade.bat?

....
I don't know if anyone could fill the blank or correct the error in my post. if not, please answer if and i'll edit it so that all info will be in one post...

************ Upgrade BIOS
use upgrade.bat, u will be prompted for options like 1,2,3,4.(open the bat file in notepad.... to see what ????)
1 for P-M
2 for P-S
3 for S-M
4 for S-s
I used 4 (my dvd as Sec-Slav). There was a post that S-M may not work.
Next be patent... u will see the backup process of ur fw... then the flashing process. It took 2-4 min for me. Ingore the "reboot message" in the process. Just wait u get "OK" word.
Thats it... reboot . If everything went well.... ur dvd should be recoginsed and be region free. RUn cdvdinfo... it should show region free or no lock ...something like that. Next Use region killer and set to auto option... check with a DVD disck.... it should play This is what i hv done for my dvd drive.. it works well without any problems. Make sure u hv good dvd disk without any problems/scratch.....

Ok, everything went right till now (i read something like 30 dvd of each format PAL and NTSC, zone 1 and 2) without complain..
This morning, something strange occurs!! i run DVD genie like usual then i recieved a message from Power DVD that tell me 4 changes left!! what the heck? More strange thing is that when i run driveinfo2.1 it tell me that the driver is unlocked!! And to finish, when i go to Cp under Xp, it tells me that 1 left change!!!
Am i loosing something on the track??

Yeah yeah...
Go ahead!
I did the same thing with my Sony DDU1621 (used s13)
FULL STEAM AHEAD!
Firmwares are not like fashions. An "earlier" release does not mean it's not what you want...
Happy flashing.
Peace.

Can somebody who has successfully completed a flash of their SONY DDU1621 s1.6 please, please please, take the time to write a full explanation similar to that attempted by 'joegib' and 'aguirre' in previous posts (A BIG THANKS TO YOU TWO!).
I'll have a crack at it and welcome any edits or further suggestions!
Can you include and/or confirm the site links as to where you get:
--------------
1. The stuff needed for the 'Real-DOS' disk?
My guess - http://www.putergeek.com/downloads/#winme_plain
--------------
2. Where you need to go to get your hands on the IDE Bus info utility - IDEDIAG.EXE?
My guess - http://www.penguin.cz/~mhi/ftp/idediag/
--------------
3. Exactly what updated patched firmware files are required and where you get them from?
My guess is the s1p6 ZIP from - http://digilander.iol.it/firmware2/1621s1p6.zip
From this zip you need the following files to put on your boot floppy.
bide00.bin, bide01.bin, mktflash.exe, and update.bat
--------------
NOW... here's where I need HELP!
--------------
4. You boot your computer using the boot floppy and run the 'IDEDIAG.EXE' utility to ensure that your drive is set to 'Secondary Slave'.
--------------
5. That being the case, you should disconnect all your other IDE drives like your hard drive and your CDRW drive etc.
HOW DO I DO THIS SAFELY?
--------------
6. Next, you re-boot your computer to get 'real DOS' again and you then run the 'update.bat' file.
--------------
HOW MY DOING SO FAR?
--------------
7. Next you select secondary slave from the list provided and then you just sit back be patient while the pc does it's thinking and hopefully Bob's your uncle right?
--------------
Would really appreciate it if someone could get back to me on this ASAP!
Cheers to you all!

short help for ddu1621 flashing :
Disconnected my cd/rw unit
Sony ddu1621 is now primary slave
Downloaded 1s6p zip packet from Etna
Unzipped to floppy a:\firm
Rebooted from dos bootdisk
then just a:\firm\upgrade
selected the primary slave option
REMEMBER TO IGNORE THE FIRST 3 REBOOT NOW!!! MESSAGES
It seems mtkflash gives those even if you backup firmware
so when the % goes to 100% for the 4th time and you get the
REBOOT YOUR PC NOW!
OK!!!
and then the regular DOS prompt, only then you must reboot.
driveinfo says no reg protection, thanks guys for alll your help!

Thanks incu... but can you tell me (being a big-time novice and all) how I disconnect my CDRW drive? I have already blown up one trying to do this and I don't think my warranty will cover another!

I have a Sony DDU 1621 v1.3(firmware) so I decided to flash the firmware to v1.6 because I was experiencing some problems with the DVD drive. I downloaded the 1621_S16 firmware upgrade from the website and followed the instructions....... the flashing went really smoothly and there were no problems.
SO FAR SO GOOD.
I loaded up Windows XP as usual and it asked me for drivers. I guess after I flashed it, the computer detects it as newly installed. And this is where I am stuck what do I do?? I can't use the dvd drive because it asks for drivers.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
