Finally!

That sounds very good, IMO:

PURE READ offers are 3 reading modes (that can be set by Pioneer's "QuietDrive utility"):

- Perfect Mode - after re-reading the damaged sector/s, if a "best-possible result" cannot be made, then the drive/software will cease. (I.E. the "perfect" rip of a track is not possible and the user should select Master mode.)

- Master Mode - after re-reading the damaged sector/s, a "best-possible result" is then used in the final ripped MP3 file.

- Standard Mode - the same as Pioneer's regular DVD drives. (I.E. the damaged sector will be read without any re-reading or best-possible result scenarios.)

riplock has nothing to do with the ability to burn, when you say it won't burn anything, what errors do you get, if any?

Motherboard Name ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA

North Bridge VIA Apollo PT880 Ultra

South Bridge: VIA VT8237A

IDE Controller VIA Serial ATA Controller - 0591

firmware:1.06

using Vista ultimate 32bit

Strange thing is, that i have just tried a Verbatim DVD-RW (did not want to keep wasting DVD's) and it burnt a Movie on it Fine. Maybe my Pioneer doesn't like my DVD-R's (Laser branded)

cheers[/list]

had this drive for about a week now, have to say it's an excellent drive. only gripe so far is it doesn't like my philips 52x cd-r and will only burn at 32x max on them, plus if I try them at 8x it defaults to 4x, go figure. still hardly ever write cd-r so not a problem, and have a 7173S also which is more than adequate for cd-r when needed. wish I waited though and got the silver 215, prefer sata caus cables are easier to hide.

waiting for MCSE to update now to enable bitsetting on dvd+r SL.:D

@ linuts,

You are attempting to burn you DVD-R MCC 03RG20 Media at 16x speed. Suggest slowing down the burning speed of this media and see if this corrects your problem.

Also as Forum Member PumaUK suggest update your Pioneer DVR-215 to the newly released version 1.18 Firmware.

Regards,
Coaster

Coaster thanks for the reply, I tried burning at 8x and 4x, both failed, that was after i updated to the 1.18 firmware.

I went and bought some Verbatim DVD-R's to see my Laser DVD-R's were the problem. (no Verbatim failed as well). But when i ran DvdInfoPro and looked at the Manufacturers of Both the Laser and Verbatim, they were both the same: MCC 03RG20. 8O

I blowed if i know why i can Burn a Verbatim DVD+RW and not an Verbatim DVD-R.

cheers

edit: I made a goof, its a Verbatim DVD+RW that will burn, but surely it should burn both + and - Media.?

That Laser DVDs are cheapo media.
Also, that Philips CD-R are burned best at 32x or slower, 52x is marketing BS. Insert the disc AND THEN use a bunspeed from the available speeds!

If Alcohol, InCD, Daemon Tools or other packet writing softwares ar einstalled, remove them.
I still think the sata controller is the problem!

Which one is it???

According to Everest its this one:IDE Controller VIA Serial ATA Controller - 0591

I went to the VIA website and downloaded and installed the latest Hyperion drivers, which are supposed to update the SATA as well as other things.

In the BIOS under SATA1 (where i connected the sata cable) it has this:

SATA1.
Device: Atapi cdrom
Vendor: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR215
LBA Mode: Supported
PIO Mode: 4
Async DMA: Multiword DMA-2
Ultra DMA: Ultra DMA-4

There is a heap of options under both PIO and Async DMA, but i wouldn't no where to start if i had to change them. :)

cheers

the sata drivers are the same as i am using, will connect up a pioneer drive and see if there are any issues, but i doubt this is the case, i have built many systems with via chipsets with the 212 drives, not an issue, cannot see the 215 making that big of a difference, what operating system are you using?

Vista Ultimate..2Gb Giel DDR2 667...Nvidia7300GT...2x120Gb HDD (IDE)..LG GSA 4167b(ata)... and the Pioneer.

What i really do not understand, is why it will burn a DVD+RW with no problems, but will not burn a DVD-R or A DVD+R. To my thinking, if it is an incompatibility issue, then it should not burn anything or read anything.

cheers

DVD+RW is not DVD-R nor DVD+R.
They are different mediatypes, beside the disc quality which always can be different.

They were the same brand as the DVD+RW (Verbatim), I understand that the "el-cheapo" laser discs could be a problem, but not when its the same brand as the one disc that successfuly burnt.

cheers

O.K> now i'm convinced its the VIA chipset thats the issue, I tried the Pioneer in a Gigabyte 965 ds3 and it worked flawlessly. Time to get an ATA drive, as its cheaper than getting a PCI-SATA card.

Thank you for all the help

cheers

I have similar write problem with the Asrock 4coreDual-VSTA and Pioneer 212 DVDRW drive.

It is due to the Via Hyperion Pro driver version. The combo is only worked with Via Hyperion Pro Ver 5.10A as listed in the www.asrock.com support website of 4CoreDual-VSTA. Try to use the drivers from the motherboard disk or the support web site. I thinks all these drivers are tested on this particular motherboard before released.

For the latest Via Hyperion Pro driver 5.15A, the write action of Nero 6 failed.

Overall, Asrock 4coreDual-VSTA is a pretty stable, reliable, overclockable (290MHz max FSB) motherboard.

Do those 5.10A drivers come in Vista 32bit, the ones from asrock are all 64 bit.
