I like to comment on the ordeals with my laptop HP Pavilion zd8000 series, which has a Toshiba/Samsumg TS-L532M DvD drive. As you all may know, besides being RPC2, this drive is somehow limited in features with the original firmware HR04.

How did I get in trouble?
](*,)

• I haven’t read the previous posts on the subject made by forum members, who already went to trouble trying to fix their misflashed drives, and jumped straight to the download page...
• It was a little confusing then selecting the right ROM, so I decided the new flash should be SD R6572M XR07 because it “made sense” matching the “R”. I couldn’t be more wrong!
• I proceeded flashing the unit with the XR07 ROM to end up with a system not booting anymore. I’ll try to explain what happened:
• Despite the “R” in the HR04, apparently this unit is made for HP to be CSEL, that’s the reason why Nero InfoTool reports it as SLAVE. (I should have paid attention to this detail)
• Flashing the DVD unit with the XR07 ROM makes the unit inverse CSEL (or Master).
• As the HDD in the laptop is also inverse CSEL, BOTH devices "collide" and can’t be accessed anymore, that’s the reason why the laptop would not boot.
• Entering the BIOS setup, none of the drives are present: HDD and DVD had disappeared...
• This laptop does not have a 2nd IDE port. As posted by Manlyman on Nov 2006, you may get a slim adapter at ebay from TRY2B BEST and attach it to a regular IDE port in another machine, but I wanted to dig further...

How did I resolve the problem? Read on…

• You will need access to another machine able to burn a CD ROM and a windows install CD.
• Go to http://web.archive.org/web/200711240512 ... /pebuilder and download the current copy of Bart’s Pre Install environment. This would give you a kind of Windows live environment to run your flash utilities.
• Prepare a Bart’s PE ISO image. The program will give you the chance to add files to the compilation. Add here the flash utility and the XU07 (or XUxx CSEL ROM). I downloaded mine from http://web.archive.org/web/200711240512 ... SD-R6572M/ as well as the flash utility WinVup2_V2070.exe from here: http://web.archive.org/web/200711240512 ... _utilities
• Once you finish the compilation, burn it into a CD.
• Back to your laptop, removing the HDD and rebooting the machine would give you access to the DVD drive again. You start REMOVING the power cord AND the Battery! Then remove 4 scr.ews from the cover underneath the DVD drive area at the bottom of the laptop, and pull the 2 ½” hard drive off the connector.
• Insert the above CD into your laptop’s drive and boot into the pre install environment.
• Using GO > Programs > A43 File Utility (similar to Windows Explorer) copy the XUxx ROM file and the windows flash utility into the RAM drive [R:]. Mark these files READ ONLY!!!. This is crucial, do not attempt to run the files from the DVD Drive (because will give you an Exception error) and do not run the files straight from RAM Drive because may get overwritten. You must mark them R/O!
• Now run the flash utility and flash your drive with the right ROM. (XUxx or non patched TUxx).
• When finished, power your unit down, REMOVE power cord AND BATTERY, gently reinsert the HDD in the connector, replace the 4 scr.ews and the cover, battery, power cord and bring your laptop back to life.
• When windows starts, go to device manager, and make it rescan for new devices. The hardware wizard should recognize your drive, when finished make sure both drives are set to DMA mode. Now my drive enjoys Ultra DMA2 xfers and does not burn DL coasters anymore.

FYI:
:?:

The line (or cable) carrying CSEL signaling (Cable SELect) in the IDE/ATA bus, is connected in parallel (simultaneously) to both: Master and Slave drives. To select a drive, the IDE controller sends a signal via this line to make the appropriate drive active, just prior to a given data transfer. Note: all the bus lines are connected in parallel to both IDE devices in the same channel.
____
CSEL (or inverted CSEL, notice the upperline) drives are made active when the line is LOW (or has a logical 0, or no voltage applied to it). Therefore, the drive selected when this line is low would be MASTER.
CSEL drives are active when this line is High (or has a logical 1, or voltage applied to it). Thus, the drive selected with this schema would be SLAVE.

One week after successfully recovering the drive, I removed it from the bay just to confirm the label was clearly printed CSEL on it, as Manlyman pointed before.

The bottom line:
I was lucky enough to get my machine back thanks to the great work of the contributors and forum members who lavishly had poured lots of knowledge and experience. I regret the fact I haven’t read more at the beginning, because otherwise could save me a lot of time and grief. I wanted to make a brain dump on my experience as a tribute to your forum. Special thanks to Hijacker and Backfire (Ex Toshibaer), who maintain the repository of files, and every other forum member who had shared their own experiences. =D>

Thanks for the tutorial trinca, I'm sure it will help a lot of people. It should be a stick.

I have a doubt, I want to flash my TS-L532M drive, my only doubt is related to the CSEL or inverse CSEL.
When I look at nero infotool I get that my TS drive is slave and the HDD as master.
Should I trust this information, then use the XU7 firmware to flash my drive? Is fundamental that I check in the drive label?

Does anyone knows if this firmware improves the DVD DL compatibility of this drive? I have tried Verbatim and RITEK without luck, got the "Can not write Medium. Incompatible format" error.

Thanks in advance!

Your only chance is VERBATIM DL, anything else is a waste.
And probably only +R DL, not -R DL.

Alright.
Last night I got some courage and did the flash. Worked great!
trinca threat helped to understand what happens and confirmed the steps that manlyman had posted to correctly flash the drive.
The informantion in nero info tool is correct, it was saying that the drive is slave so I used the XU07 (patched). I did not open my laptop to recheck in the drive label.
The Toshiba flash program (WinVup2_V2070.exe) after selecting the right firmware and press start update, says that is not compatible but I was brave and continued.
Some seconds of tension waiting the WinXP logo to appear... and that it comes. :D :D

Thanks to chef, backfire, trinca and manlyman that discussed this subject in the forum!

Well done, dorittos!
Can you please indicate your laptop make and model? Is that a Pavilion zd8000 series?
BTW, I had removed the DvD drive in my laptop and the sticker is stamped CSEL, confirming the posts made before by manlyman.

I'm glad the subject above had help you made the decision to go ahead and flash your drive.

It was my pleasure to help others on this matter. I edited the original to add some comments on the CSEL line. I never though my post would deserve to be put as sticky or FAQ.

Thank-you, PumaUK

@ NORTH.POLE,

If you have exactly followed Forum Member trinca above guide and your TS-L532M Drive is unable to read the data off the CD indicates that your previous miss flashing of your TS-L532M Drive caused un-repairable damage to the Drive. Unfortunately your only remedy is to purchase a replacement Drive.

Regards,
Coaster

trinca,

thank you!!!

You are a god!!!

I hastily jump in and flashed just as you making the assumption about the common "r" in the toshiba and hp flashes.

If it were not for you and the others that guided you through this process, I would have been out a lot of money.

Thank you again :D :D :D

Feeling glad for you. I knew the original firmware name would be misleading.

I had almost the same problem. I flashed my Presario V2000 with TS-L532M optical driver, but I did it with TR07 also....I put the optical drive into an other HP notebook (that used optical drive as master) and flashed it with the correct firmware.

I'm glad you found another way out of the problem!

Ok, that's great. The solution I had explained at the beginning of this thread has worked for many people, including myself. Maybe you skipped one step, like getting into BIOS the minute you reboot the laptop with the re-flashed drive and having it to re-detect your drives, or having the "Add/Remove Hardware wizard" recognize the optical drive again (because the firmware has changed, your O/S will take the re-flashed drive as a new device attached to your laptop). It is not the only possible solution, and it is way more simple if you have 2 compatible laptops, like those made by the same mfr with similar characteristics but with the Master/Slave reversed as you mention in your post, in another case manlyman has posted another solution involving the use of an IDE port adapter and plugging such optical drive/adapter combination into the standard IDE port in another PC. It all boils down to finding a method to re-flash the drive with the correct firmware.

Thank-you for your contribution!
Regards,

Trinca

That is the "usual" way to re-flash a slimtype drive with the correct firmware...
