Hi,
I also got a Asus notebook with this Matshita UJ-831d dual layer drive.
I've just tested DVD-R burning with Samsung Pleomax DVD-R 4x media, but it fails at around 70%, with hardware error (Tried Nero, Deep Burner, and Burn4Free). Is it the Samsung media, or is it really hardware error?

I've got an Asus notebook too with the UJ-831D. And I've some pb too.
My budget DVDs work fine, but I can't burn in full speed with any support. With Verbatim or Budget DVD, I can burn only in 4 or 5 x, and the buffer of the burner goes down, up, down... But the nero buffer doesn't move.
I modify the registry to view the real burning speed in nero, and with CD I burn at 12x maximum (philips CD) and with DVD 5x (Verbatim and Budget).
I ask to Asus France and they answer "search the web or the burner manufacturer site". But on the matsushita site, they say for UJ-831, all upgrade or firmware update, ask to the notebook manufacturer.
I can't find anywhere a firmware or a site which speaks about this burner support.
So please if anyone have a link or a file !!!!

I don't think verbatim or philips are cheap media. Budget, OK, very cheap media. But I have the same problems with Verbatim.

I asked to Asus Italy a week ago but I have not an answer....I'll try again.
I have no problem with DVD-R and DVD-RW, I tried different (cheap) brand and all worked fine..only with Budget DVD-R 4X I have got problem...but it's normal : Rule#1...(the Budget is too cheap )
As DVD+R I tried only TDK, (TDK002; Item code : DVD+R47CBEC25)...now TDK are chepear than Verbatim, but I don't think they are so cheap media. (A friend of mine did a test : TDK+R Vs. Verbatim DVD+R 8X with "nero CD-DVD speed" and TDK won ... )
How can I contact matshita-matshushita?
I found some sites but I'm not sure that it's correct site...there sell PLC
Bye

Contacting Matshita/Matsushita/Panasonic directly will problably give nothing.
If you have an ASUS Computer/Laptop you should contact Asus because the drive inside is an OEM drive then - the support has to come from Asus. Matshita ... will deny any kind of support in that case.

Asus answer me that I have to ask directly with Matshita/Panasonic.
But Matshita say "no support for this drive, see with your notebook manufacturer".
Let's hope another laptop brand use this drive and provide any firmware update compatible with asus "OEM" drive.

I'm also looking for e newer firmware for this drive, i tried different kind of dvd's but all with different problems:
nashua 1x -r: unspecified target error
philips 8x +r: could't perform disc at once (and burning at max 4 speed)
sony 8x +r: works but only at 2,4 speed
TDK 4x +r: works at 4x
Sony 1x -rw: ? error
Asus tells me that the problem is with nero, that the problem should be solved with a nero update.. (but my nero is already updated to the latest version (6.6.0.6 reloaded) (this was an answer from someone from the RMA service). I also send a support question on the site but no reply yet.
I Also tried to contact matshita, but they send me back to asus, i replyed to that mail that i know that thay are the ones that make the new firmwares, and not asus.. but still waiting for the next reply.
I also have a contact with another NB manufacturer who uses matshita who i've contacted for a newer firmware, but the first answer from him was a 831s firmware and not the 831d, so still waiting for an answer on that one.
So i've tried 3 different ways, and none of them succesfull so far.... Maybe we should all stalk asus and matshita with mails
I'll keep you all informed about the progress.

if you search google for this drive, you also find people with toshiba and acer notebooks with this drive, so maybe we can try it with one of those manufacturers...

I got a new answer from someone from the RMA serivce of Asus, he said he could help me because it's a new drive and he doesn't have any information about it....?
I wonder how it works, Matshita sends you to the notebook manufacterer, and they don't know anything... I'm gonna stalk Matshita untill they send me a new firmware, they must have one, I've never seen a drive brand that doesn't make new firmwares.
Maybe they didn't understand what kind of drive we're talking about, I believe that Matshita also makes the internal things for NEC drives and NEC does make their own firmwares.
But theses notebook drives are completely ready when they are shipped to the notebook manufacterer.....
Anyone else wanna give a try mailing Matshita?? Here is their support adress: device_tsupport@pcc.mei.co.jp

OK I'm going to send an e-mail now to matshita and explain the problem too.
If many people write to matshita, they may do something.

Good-afternoon.
I've purchased an Asus notebook with your UJ-831D Drive inside.
I've some problems with the drive. My Burning software (NERO 6.6.0.6) says 8x burning speed, but I can only burn in 4 X and the hardware buffer of the drive goes down and up and down.... (It takes more than 22 minutes to burn a 4.7 GB DVD)
Same thing with CD (philips 52 X) I can only burn them in 12X instead of 24X
I don't think that it come from the DVD or CD it's not cheap media.
I hope that a new firmware improve these problems.
I hope that you can help me because Asus, the notebook manufacturer answer me that "They can't provide firmware for the drive, ask Matshita !!!"
My drive is in 1.00 firmware.
Thanks

Hi there!
I have the same problem!
I have an acer 4002Wlmi laptop with an Matshita UJ-831D. It seems I cannot find any firmware for this dvd burner model!
I can burn CD-R so far, and DVD+RW (only tried Sentinel brand with no problems). But when burning DVD-R I get an "unspecified target error" (tried "Sentinel" and "TDK" brand).
I'm gonna fill Matshita with mails requesting a firmware!
Tanx!
