[code]Drive: Pioneer DVR-108XL (Dual format 16x speed DVD+/-/DL Burner *XL*) Also known as: DVR-108XLA, DVR-108XLB, DVR-A08XLA, DVR-A08XLB, etc. Firmware Rev.: v1.14 Author: >NIL: Date: 2004.10.31 - 23:15 GMT Patched: o RPC-1 (Region Free): Remember, patching your drive to region free is only half the job. A region free drive will not turn your system region free by itself. For more info, please read http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=239 o 12xRip (Unlimited ripping speed): The official firmware from Pioneer limits the ripping speed on video discs. This limitation has been removed. 12x is only the maximum THEORETICAL speed that the drive can achieve, but not the sustained speed you are likely to get when ripping. Most DVD's will start ripping around 2x to 4x and end up around 8x or 10x. THIS is normal. o nx4all : All speeds for -R/+R/+R9 media This firmware allows you to select ALL burning speeds on -R/+R/+R9 media. The official firmware from Pioneer only allows a limited set of Pioneer approved media to use these speeds but this patch removes that limitation. Write strategies for approved media should not be altered by the patch. PROPER BURN OF NON APPROVED MEDIA IS NOT GUARANTEED! Not patched: - Bitsetting ("Burn on -R media instead, people!!!") - nx4all on RW media. Tests have shown that burning RW media at higher than rated speed was a bad idea Release Notes: Consider this firmware as beta, especially on the +R/+R9 side AGAIN, HIGH SPEED BURN OF LOW GRADE MEDIA IS NOT GUARANTEED Flashing Instructions: 1/ Download the latest version of DVRFlash from http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org and extract the executable you need (Windows, DOS or Linux) in the directory where you extracted the patched firmwares 2/ READ THE DVRFLASH INSTRUCTIONS!!! 3/ If you are flashing from windows, and I: is your DVR-107 drive, open a DOS window and type a command like: DVRFlash -v I: R8143108.114 or, *IF* you need to flash the kernel (Rebadged -> Pioneer): DVRFlash -vf I: R8143008.114 R8143108.114 Alternatively, if all of the above looks too advanced to you you can use the graphical user interface addon to DVRFlash Useful Links: http://forum.rpc1.org/ (DVD-R/RAM/+RW section) http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/ Thanks to: Flash, Agent Smith and the generous contributor who sent me a DVR-108 drive ;

I haven't read about anyone losing their drive completely, but it's possible.
Your drive wouldn't work until you flashed back to appropriate firmware.

Well, I actually have read about someone with a 107 drive who flashed the 107XL firmware and LOST their drive.
Flashing a standard firmware onto an XL drive is possible but not advised.
From lack of opposite reports, flashing an XL firmware onto a standard drive WILL KILL your drive.
You CANNOT convert a standard drive to an XL one. The hardware is different.

Well, unless anybody reports a problem, this is final.
We DO NOT need to go through all the beta stages that we had with the 108, because with the 108, I need to adjust the patch for changes that Pioneer indroduced between the 1.06 and 1.14 revision
On the other hand, the 1.14 revisions for the standard and the XL have no differences as to the way they should be patched, so whatever worked for the 108 should work for the 108XL
The only possibility is that I [*Profanity*] up a byte somewhere (I'm only human), and this is why it is experimental at this stage.
If I paid enough attention to what I was doing, this release should be final however.
Please test and report

I m using Verbatim DVD-R up to 8x
The drives uses Z-CLV.
Use DVDDecrypter or Nero CD/DVD Speed to see the TRUE burnspeed.

darren, the kernel is for converting rebadged XL drives (if these exist) into true Pioneer XL drives, just like the standard kernel is to convert standard rebadged drives (MEDION, etc...) into true Pioneer standard drives.
As to your results:
- yes 7 mins is standard time to burn a DVD at 16x
- extra time is added for Lead Out
- if you burn a non 16x certified DVD at 16x, chances are that part of it will be unreadable.
- as [_chef_] pointed out, if you look hard enough, you should have little trouble finding out why you get the results you get.
