I use Windows 2000 on an Abit IT7, and the Transfer Mode in the Device Manager is always PIO-mode. Nero Info-tool says DMA is enabled though, probably because of this:



Using the 'Intel Application Accelerator' tool in the Start Menu I can see that my DMA settings are UDMA-2. Maybe it is something to add to the guide.

You may have issues when doing this on systems that use VIA drivers. A did this for a friend and the secondary controller refused to reload normally even when we pointed it to the driver file location. I found the resolution was to uninstall the driver and reboot into safe-mode. Only then did it reload normally. It was fine when we rebooted normally. Also all the drives did recover into UDMA Mode 2 (instead of the PIO mode that it was before).

This issue is listed as fixed in XP SP2. I can't verify that since I'm still running SP1 with the hotfix that I got free on request from Microsoft. The hotfix worked as advertised. With my first DVD burner (BTC 1008), I'd see it drop back into PIO mode every few days. Since installing the hotfix, I've never had the problem again with the BTC 1008 or the NEC 2500A and Pioneer 108 that followed it.

Hi...I am exhibiting these symptoms, but my drive is USB--

Lite-On 851S@832s (actually sx for external)

1. Are the firmwares different for the S (internal) and SX (external)?
I currently have the CG4E firmware per instructions here to get
851@832.

2. On single-layer burns, I'm ok at 4x; on double-layer burns, I get buffer underruns (yellow lights) at 2.4x

3. NERO test shows 24% CPU usage at 1x, 48% at 2x, N/A at 4x and 8x.

So how do I get DMA info/access on this USB enclosure, since it isn't IDE/ATAPI??

SYSTEM INFO
HD is well defragged, etc.
XP pro, SP1, P-IV 2.4gHz, 1 gB RAM
USB Network adapter turned OFF when burning

I also think I found an easy way to reset the dma status.

U have to use the well known tool "Starforce Nightmare"

start it, click "disable ch2" (ata controller channel 2)

wait a bit, till its ready

click "enable ch2" and thats it!!!!

u may have to click "enable cd rom"

u can also use this tool to hot plug and unplug optical drives - no need to turn the computer off or restart!!!

Yeah I like that solution because it means you don't have to turn off your computer or restart it. Makes things a lot easier.
