i have been told that idvd has an easter egg.
if you uncompress the file below in your home folder, and then control click on idvd's "burn" button, you can save to .dmg or external dvd-r.
i confirm that it's working here.

The name alone is funny for those who understand german: HPfurz.

Thank you "John Q Doe"...
Quote: The name alone is funny for those who understand german
Yes, for those who don't understand german, here is an English approximation: "Phfart".
This name reminds me of Marathon (but it didn't smell that like). Also, there was an easter egg in this game that was like this one was posted: binhex data was spread in the game, joining them in some way (see http://marathon.bungie.org/story/newsep-oct96.html and search for "hexadecimal" for details) gave you a new secret level. How many hours did I spend playing Marathon? I still enjoy Aleph One from time to time...
Anyway, I had some bad time converting this post to an archive that Stuffit would handle, so I post it here for those who want it.
And yes, it does indeed activate something in iDVD, but I have no external drive so I can only confirm you can save disc image files.

This easter egg looks to be really cool. One problem though. How do I get iDVD3 to install on my Pismo.
When I bought iLife3 I was expecting to be able to use iDVD to burn to my external FireWire attached Pioneer-104. I bought the drive from OWC and was one of the lucky ones to get the Enabler for OSX 10.1.5 that supposedly let you burn to external drives. So I was hugely disappointed when iDVD refused to install.
Does anyone know if ther is/will be an upgrade deal for iLife3 to iLife4? and can anyone tell me how to trick iDVD to instll on my Pismo?
Pismo 500MHz, 1GB Ram, 48 GB Travelstar, OSX 10.3.1

Hi,
iDVD 4 will launch on a G4 machine without an internal SuperDrive present. You can do everything except burn to an external SD, but with this easter egg, that seems to be possible (check out the main page of this site).
Unfortunately, there is no upgrade plan from iLife 3 to iLife 4. Even worse, in your case, you can't launch iDVD because your machine doesn't have a G4 in it. Bummer.

Bummer is right So can it be tricked into thinking I have a G4? Assuming that iDVD really doesn't need the Altivec engine, it should be possible to hack a resource where iDVD checks to see if the cpu is a G4. Any ideas?

You can install on any G4, just not with the installer if you don't have an internal superdrive. But it is true that it won't run on a G3. (I upgraded my pismo to G4, so it does run.) You can open a terminal and change directory into the package directory, and open the iDVD package directly with the "open" command:
open [packagename]
Sorry I don't have the disk with me here, so I can't give more specific directions. (I think you can install this way on G3, too, but what's the point.)

Getting it to install is one step on the way. The next is to make it think my G3 is really a G4. So where does iiDVD check. Is the information kept in OSX in some resource? in which case it should be possible to hack it. If iDVD checks in the ROM it is a different story, unless the ROM is loaded into RAM during boot and read from there, in which case it should be possible to hack that too. But where? Has anyone done it or know where/how?

gr8dane,
the next question is: will a G3 run G4 optimized code?
The answer is no, and DVD encoding is definetely a job where a G4 makes a differences over a G3. 'G4-only' is not a marketing limitation in this very case, I reckon.
Maybe it's worth trying, though. Especially on older version of iDVD. But don't hold your breath.

I have been pursuing this under the assumption that iDVD does not make use of the altivec engine, but if it does there is no hope of course. In the meantime I will continue using my DragonBurn to write DVDs on my external FireWire burner.

He do:
http://www.apple.com/support/idvd/
Code: iLife System Requirements Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor 600MHz G3 or faster required for GarageBand G4 or faster required for GarageBand software instruments 733MHz G4 or faster required for iDVD 256MB of physical RAM Mac OS X v10.2.6 or later (Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later recommended) QuickTime 6.4 or later (QuickTime 6.5 included) Display with at least 1024-by-768-pixel resolution DVD drive required to install GarageBand and iDVD 4.3GB of disk space required to install GarageBand, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD; or 250MB to install iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie only.
As you can see a 733MHz G4 or faster is required for iDVD.
I think there is no way to use iDVD with today's G3 processors: iDVD's code is not Altivec optimized.... is Altivec only 8)

The files I downloaded and installed in my user folder are identified as
"Amorphium" RSRC documents when they unstuff. When I open and save a program in iDVD, I can hold down the control key and hit burn and the program starts to do the DVD. Then it quits.
I'm using a Powerbook and an external Pioneer A06.
Why are those files owned by Amorphium (a graphics modeling program)
and is this my problem?
Thanks

Is iDVD updated to version 4.0.1?
Does iDVD works if you remove the two files from your home dir?
If not try deleting iDVD's preferences.

iDVD is 4.01. When the files are removed, the burn button doesn't respond. I trashed the prefs. I acts like it's going to burn but then just stops. Doesn't quit, just stops.
My Powerbook is a 667. Could that be a problem?

A 733 G4 is required.... maybe this is problem.
Look at com.apple.iDVD.plist preference file maybe there is a sring for G4 MHz chekup like for other Apple products....

I initially had the same problem. Then I realized I wasn't getting the dialog box to choose between burning to DVD or a .dmg file. In order to make this work you need to control click and HOLD the burn button til the dialog box comes up. Then select your external drive. Should work then.

Thanks for the tip Kevdog. iDVD now works on my Powerbook 667 with external burner.
I wasn't holding down the burn button long enough.
Thanks again,
