Firmware 1.08b
DVD-R
Manufacturer: Nanya Platics Corp.
Speed: 4x
Result: Not playable in 3 Stand-Alones (Cyberhome, Xoro, Thomson), unreadable in the NEC itself and in my Toshiba 1402
Maybe bad quality media or too fast burning
I can give no further information on this media because, as I said, it is not readable anymore. (Startet DiscInfo before burning...)
DVD-RW
Manufacturer: OPTODISCK001
Speed: 1x
Result: Readable in the Xoro SA-Player, but not the Cyberhome and Thomson (Both are not capable of reading DVD+RW but only DVD+R so this is maybe are general Problem with RW-Media). Also readable in the NEC itself.
Media Information
Media code/Manufacturer ID OPTODISCK001
Format Type UDF 1.02
Book Type DVD-RW
Media Type DVD-RW
Media Id Code Speed 1.0x 1385KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1385KBps
Write Strategy Speed 2.0x 2770KBps
Data area starting sector 30000h
Data area end sector 7BABFh
Linear Density 0.267um/bit
Track Density 0.74um/track
Number of Layers 1
That's all I've tested so far...

CyberHome cannot read DVD+RW??
Which model is it and have you set the booktype to DVD-ROM?
If you use Nero, use ImgTooBurn instead for burning!

Yes, BitSetting was set to DVD-ROM.
The player is an old model: Cyberhome AD-M 212. But it can read DVD-R and DVD+R.
I friend of mine has a Cyberhome 402 - which can read +RW - even with DVD+RW BitSetting-

Have you read here?

Maybe a newer Firmware could (have) fix(ed) that problem with DVD+RW.
Greetings.

I've read the reports on dvdrhelp.com
The 212 Model had problems with lousy dvd-drives. Mine was bad, too so I sent the player to cyberhome and they replaced it.
Maybe the people who can read RW-Media with this player are having another drive in it.
Once I tried to connect my Toshiba 1402 with the player. It worked and obviously all medias could be played.
The old drive was a KTC.
The actual drive has the following data shown in the hidden menu of the player:
DVD-ROM: CXD1867
Mod: Player .00/11/20
Rev: 0.54
The firmware on the player itself is the newest.

This disk is a painted Imation disk marked as 2x, but as you can see above it's recognized as 1x only Dunno if this is a faulty query by the hacked drive or if I was cheated
I did a quick burn/verify of 1.36GB iso/udf with CDRwin @ 1x and it works! My Lite-on 166S can read it as well. Gonna burn a full dvd-video now to see if my Yamaha stand-alone eats it...
update:
A full 4.37GB dvd-video burnt with Nero on the same -RW only reads back with the NEC itself. My Lite-on and stand-alone can't read it properly
update2:
I've updated to 1.09 and burned the same dvd-video with clonedvd. It now plays in both players it failed in before, but near the end of the disc it still fails (crc-errors, playback freezes).

Strange, -RW media seems to work pretty consistantly but -R media does not.

That might be because (almost) all the -RW media reported here have the same manufacturer id (OPTODISCK001). And those disks are 1x only. Might well be that writing at that (dead) slow speed requires a less stringent writing strategy

It's not that strange! Keep in mind that the NEC 1300 is known for the lack of media compatibility and only the almost everyday release of new firmwares mainly by Herrie, made this drive more competitive.
I'm pretty sure that if it wasn't for Herrie, this drive wouldn't have sold like it did. Also, it's reported that firmware 1.09 is the most compatible with lower quality (in fact with all types) media... For a bether performence on - media, wait a few more days until new releases appear, cause i'm prety sure they will...

Etna,
you are awesome!
In case of 2x DVD-RW I can recommend PrimeOn and TDK medias.
I hope the lack of burning-quality with DVD-R medias can be fixed.

Hi,
big thanks for this great job!
I've tried one TDK DVD-RW on my tuned nec1100, firm 1.08, it was burned with 2x speed and works flawlessly in my toshiba 1612 dvd-rom and in three different stand-alone players.
And I've tried one TDK DVD-R (1x - 4x), it was successfully burned at 4x speed. The verification of the data was successfull. The burner itself can read the disc, but not my toshi and one of the three standalones. Tomorrow I will buy another DVD-R and I'll try it to burn with 2x.
I know I could give the new hacked 1.09 a try, but I want to wait until it supports bitesetting.

Flashing 1.09 works for me, but there is something still wrong:
I have NEC1300A at work and I use Ritek & Verbatim DVD-R 4x disk with 100% success rate.
Today I flashed my home drive (NEC1100A) with hacked 1.09 firmware and I tried to burn one Ritek DVD-R disk at 4x.
Burning went fine, it took 14 minutes for 4.3 Gb but the disk is unreadable on the drive itself and on any DVD-ROM drive I tried!
Any ideas why 4x burning produces coasters?

easy fella i was only making an observation.
Just tried a Maxell 4X, at 4X i got a power calibration error, at 2X the burn went fine. The disc is just about readable in the NEC, No chance in a Liteon 165 but yet worked ok in a cheapo Pacific standalone

I tried more media and my results are very bad:
Verbatim 2x DVD-RW burnt fine at 2x - disk is readable Ok.
Verbatim 4x DVD-R burnt fine at 4x - UNREADABLE
Verbatim 4x DVD-R burnt fine at 2x - UNREADABLE
Ritek Red 4x DVD-R burnt fine at 4x - UNREADABLE
Ritek Red 4x DVD-R burnt fine at 2x - UNREADABLE

I think he was referring to The Sack's post about less problems with -RW and more with -R.
I'm gonna check the 1.09 f/w too. Just waited an hour for a 4.37GB dvd-video -RW disk and it's only readable without errors on the NEC. 1.3GB of data was readable im more drives

Now i think we have to check the hardware again or we have to accept that DVD-R will not work.

Firstly; Thanks for the software release.
Something very strange with the discs happening here - I've tried burning two discs with Nero, both Ritek dye made by Datawrite/Datasafe.
First disc - a 4x using the 1.08 software.
Seemed to burn sucessfully at 4x. Trying to read produced a lot of CRC errors. Trying to read the disc on my work machines proved unsucessful on a Sony DVD Writer and a Liteon 163 DVD-ROM *BUT* the contents could be seen on a NEC1300. Still full of CRC errors though.
Second disc - a 2x using the 1.09 software.
Burned but would not verify. Data could not be seen on the NEC1100/1300. HOWEVER I then tried it on another machine here and got an "Incompatible medium inserted" error when I tried reading it in a Pioneer 106 (using DVD Decryptor). HOWEVER I then put the disc into the other DVD drive in the machine and it read in perfectly.
Have to take the machine apart to find out the model of the drive.
edit: Now done - its an Artec DHM-G48.
Possibly also worth mentioning that when Nero started to write on the 2 speed disc it estimated for the same as a 4 speed disc (approx 15 minutes). Actual burn time was 30 minutes though.
