I'm considering purchase of a DVD-ROM drive and I've seen this new DVD-ROM from Toshiba in a few shops. However, there is no mention of this drive on Toshiba's websites. Does anyone have specifications of the drive or even experience with it? Thanks.

I'm curious to know the specs as well. All I've seen, it's being sold as a new generation 16x DVD / 48x CD-ROM drive.

From what I've found this new Toshiba is almost the same as 1712, but has 256 KB buffer and doesn't read DVD-RAM.

The same was when 1712 hit the market - official Toshiba websites posted technical specs after almost 2 months...

That would be kind of stupid from Toshiba.
I thought they would push DVD-RAM in general!?!?
Only drives from Hitachi and Matshita/Panasonic also can read DVD-RAM.

Hello

I bought this drive on last friday and I'm very unhapy mostly of slow ripping speeds and lack of DVD-RAM support. I've ripped non-css film Being John Malkovich with avg. speed of 3.5X :(

You'll have to wait for "no speed limit" patched firmware from Hijacker. I hope he'll be able to do it...

Regarding DVD-RAM: do you really need it?

Dj_AnT contacted me and I've replied. Waiting for his answer.

If there are any others than him with this drive please email me. But do it only if you know how to use DOS.

Could someone post screenshot from DISCInfo.

DAMN! This doesn't look good.

Toshiba probably changed it's hardware. Until I don't get this drive in my hands I doubt there will be region free patch for it or any other rip speed removable limitations. If anyone finds the firmware for it anywhere on the internet, please send it to me ASAP.

If anyone can, please open the drive and scan the PCB in details. Send the scans to me. Or a least write down the chip names.

Toshiba... Why?

I just built my computer and installed this drive. There's definitely a 2X ripping limitation. I also have a Pioneer DVR-106D with RPC1 and it's working perfectly.

Any progress on firmware for the Toshiba 1802? If not, do you think a Sony DDU-1621 is a good replacement? I want a RPC1 drive with no 2X limitation.

Thanks!

No luck with 1802 from my side. The drive is diffrent then others. Probably new hardware and CPU. I'll not know this until I get one in my hands but I have no plans on buying one just so I can patch it for you guys. I allready got two 1612, one 1712 and one 1502 extra at home . I don't need another DVD.

If you can then buy 1712. It can read both formats and with my firmware it's a fast ripper.

Maybe I'll be lucky and this drive will drop on my mailbox by excident. But until it does you guys are on your own... If you find the firmware anywhere on internet please send it to me.

The 1621 is a bad drive. Many users have reported problems with dvd reading and firmware upgrading. Use the search fonction in the forum to see that. My friend have it and it is just problems.

If you don't find the so wanted toshiba, go for a liteon or a pioneer.

Halloooooooo! I don't have this drive. They don't sell it in Slovenia and I have no plans on buying it since I have more then enough DVD drives at home.

When Toshiba publicly releases the firmware (might be never) I'll take a look at it.

Maybe the drive has 512kb Buffer but only 256kb of them are used...

I know this sounds weird and stupid, but it would not be the first drive with such a limitation!

OK guys. We can try another thing. The one who know what they are doing, download MTKFlash. Boot to DOS and try to read the firmware out of the drive with it. It might be MTK compatible.

Check whatever chipset Samsung drives are based on - Toshiba and Samsung started a joint venture (development, production and selling of optical drives).

1.Has anybody checked out, if the 1802 supports DVD+?
The 1712 supports DVD+, although Toshiba doesnt mention it on their website.

2. The 1802 doesnt support DVD-RAM anymore, who cares?

3. The 1802 has more Cache, but 10ms more seektime than the 1712, why is the new drive slower, although it has more cache (256kb instead of 192kb)?

4. no patches for 1802

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why should anybody buy the 1802, the 1712 is the better drive!

Toshiba sucks.

for 3. new hardware, new design == everything is mixed up, you cannot compare it with earlier drives!
