Pacman, please help me :) Where did you get the firmware unpacked ? What tools do you use, how do you do it ? :) I would like to look deeper into it, and help. Never patched a firmware, but many other stuff, im not a complete idiot, only new to firmwares.

wouldn't it be possible to change all +r 4x media codes in the firmware to allow them 8x ? Something similar like the pioneer 1x to 2x patch for the medias ..

Yes that can be done, but I would rather not. as the results are crap, if you want a specific MID code changed to 8x just ask and I will do it for you.

OK. Got that. Seems to be correct, since in a earlier post someone wrote that the value 06 (HEX) has to be changed to 1E (HEX) to allow 8x writing. Since the media id of the verbatim disks i have here is yuden000 etc and they allow 8x writing i found the hex value 1E behind the mid in the hs0e.exe file. Now i only would like to know how it works, some mid have a value of 02, some 06, and some 1e ok ..we know 1e, so what is 06 4x ? and 02 is 2,4x ? Would be interessting. Pacman did you already flash you modified firmware file ? I only would see problems in some checksums the hs0e.exe might have. For that case we really would need the 1MB Binary flash file someone mentioned here.

Ok just to be 1000000% sure :) You edited the hs0e.exe file, saved it again and then just started the modified hs0e.exe file and flashed over the uhm (old) hs0e firmware already on your drive ? I mean is there no error like same firmware or something ?

tryed to burn mirror x4 disk that would only burn at x2.4 using record now max at x8 no go disk would not utilize same in nero had to reboot pc at red burn light on drive stayed on then tryed burning the disk,
at x4 in nero and the disk utilized and burned that speed so this is good news as this disk would only write at x2.4
can u point me to the tut HERRIE made and u are using to do this and maybe i can help some more

I would guess it is just a binary coding of the available write speeds:
Bit 0: 1x
Bit 1: 2.4x
Bit 2: 4x
Bit 3: 6x
Bit 4: 8x
Bit 5: do not try this one at home :)

So, $1E is a binary %00011110 -> 2.4x,4x,6x,8x

Take the 1MB HS0E firmware binary (not the official update exe). You will find the RitekR02 part around $C01D2. Change address $C01EB from $06 to $1E to allow 8x burning.

yes it worked. burned a full movie-dvd in 8:03 Min.
the burning process starts with 6x and switch to 8x at 28%. with other media (rico), it starts with 4x and switch later at 6....8x.
but if i read that burned media with dvd-decrytor as a iso, i get at 28% a read error... the read process aborts. but in my dvd-player the whole movie works fine from beginning to end without any pobs. how can this be, that the burner can't read the own written media??

Yep had the same m8, best keeped at 4x, now i know the speed changes, i think.
01 = 1
02 = 2
06 = 2, 4
1E = 8

Still testing
