The Firmware Page

I did;
If I would just simply double clicked on it, i assume the terminal window would not even pop up...
So i followed the steps, but it simply gave me an error message, see above...

The posted log says that the drive to be flashed were not given as an parameter to the flasher.
Therefore it cannot work.

And how can i give it as a parameter...

I am following the instructions:
MacOS flashing instructions:
- Unzip MatshitaFlasher.zip and the firmware zip file
- Make sure there is no disc in the drive.
- The firmware .zip file typically includes two firmware .dat files of ~700-800KB size, one original and one RPC1 patched firmware
- In Finder drop the firmware .dat file (not the directory) you want to flash on the MatshitaFlasher application.
- A terminal window will pop up, listing drive and firmware ids and ask you if you want to continue flashing
- In case of drive/firmware mismatch or a corrupted firmware file the drive will not be flashed

but the problem is the same...

You can start the flasher manually. Copy the simple_flash binary from MatshitaFlasher.app/Contents/Resources and the firmware file you want to the desktop, start Terminal, run
cd Desktop
and start the flasher with
./simple_flash 0 firmware file name

Ok, first time posting here. I've been having the same problem with the UJ-898 firmware flash. I've tried the drag-and-drop method and the manual execution of simple_flash and still get the (null) error. No disk in the drive either, the drive has been used, and I have the right firmware. Even restarted.

And I DO know my way around UNIX terminal commands

[both files are on the Desktop]

$ cd ~/Desktop
$ ./simple_flash 0 UJ-898_HD10_RPC1.dat
simple_flash V 2.01 compiled at Feb 4 2010 00:22:16
Selected firmware: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898 HD10
fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device

what os version are you guys using?

Came here to post I was having the exact same problem except I'm HC10. I downloaded a older version of the flasher that I couldn't find on page 1. It's the 0.6 version. I don't know if it was pure luck but I restarted my computer 3-4 times and was not having any success.

Used the same exact instructions from the blog posted a page or two back and it worked on my first try. My OSX is 10.7.3

Well, I wonder how people with Mac OS X Lion actually managed...

I have Mac OS 10.7.3. My drive is a UJ-8A8, for which I found a rpc1 firmware googling.
Now, I cannot find a MatshitaFlasher that works with me because it either says
"operation not permitted" when I use a script (which probably means that the guy who wrote it didn't write it for bash, the default shell in Lion) or
"PowerPC code cannot run on this machine…", etc.

Now, I am fairly proficient with any flavour of Unix, I am knowledgeable about Mac OS X (though I know better Snow Leopard), and I would be grateful to get a link to a version of MatshitaFlasher which works on Lion AND has an intelligible script (or else a work-around). I cannot understand which is the appropriate mix which will magically work in my environment.

Nothing wrong about the script, you simply have not the adequate rights, obvious.

No, not so obvious, I am afraid.
I have done that from an administrator account and there is no apparent reason why I need to be root (which of course I know how to do) to do a vulgar running of a script which does nothing special.

sure this has been answered before that it doesn't work using lion. have to use an environment that is not lion, rather than downgrade the OS.

hi . i am having Macbook pro with Lion 10.7.3, having Matshita UJ 898 RPC-2 , firmware HC09 locked in region 2.
Is it possible to flash this drive with a RPC-1 firmware.

So the issue does not seem to be whether Lion or not, but, again, which MatshitaFlasher to use and how.

Hey comrades, I read this blog for the past 3 days and still I cannot find any step-by-step instructions for flashing my Mac drive. Can someone point me to such post please. I have the flasher0.6 and both .dat downloaded.
These are the specifics of my Mac drive: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-8A8, HA13. I am running 10.7.3, I can install Win XP or 7 via Bootcamp (currently I have it via VMware). I found some instructions for drives 8X* where the X is a number, but nothing for 8A*. Thank you for your help and patiens.

what have you actually done, what are the dat files. downloaded from where? If you are referencing to the blog that is linked, then we do not give any support for anything that is posted in it. It is not connected in anyway to rpc1.

About 4 weeks ago I downloaded some files from some forum with no instruction on how actually to execute it.
That post had been deleted on that blog and now I am looking for some instructions on how actually to get it done.

The files are named:

MatshitaFlasher 0.6

I haven't done anything yet, just trying to get some information and see if I can get my drive region free. Can you help me out here or not? thanks in advance.

Now this is not instructions from RPC1, this is what i know from people pointing me to the blog when it was there and reading it. Many people on that blog could not get it to work. Some user's then come here and have a pop at us for it. I know you haven't. But the success of this is limited. Please try and report back. BE PATIENT though when executing the commands, and give it time, as some expect instant action and brick there drive.

Back to my question, I have read most of your topics and none of them actually answer my question.
Unless the post with steps for firmware 8X* will also work for my Mac with 8A8.

The files were downloaded from one on the post on this forum, can't find it anymore, I went thru too many of them.
It took me to a different board and then to a download page. Let me know if you can help me or not please.
(please do not try to look for some kind of emotions or attitude in this post, coz there is none, it is simply a question)

ps I have never expected the admins of this forum to take any liability for someones Mac getting messed up,
it is not even a logical conclusion if you take into the account all of the details.

PS One more time, I am not expecting you to take any kind of responsibility for my Mac issues.
So, feel free to have any suggestions, also would it be better to flash it thru boot camp vs Lion/Snow Leopard.
I can also just put in a spare HDD just to flash it in Snow Leopard or Leopard. I am not actually sure if my current mac
will run Leopard, it might be too new, and no drivers on Leopard.

we have had posts from people saying they used the windows version via bootcamp, and dumped the firmware and flashed the produced rpc1 file successfully. Obviously i haven't tried it so cannot 100% say for sure. There is alot of issues with snow leopard later matshita drives, so some members have said only 0.6 and what i said will work. As with all forums, its hit and miss.

As it happens, by using the flasher Puma pointed me at, using a firmware I had found googling, though revision 14 (not 13) and putting this firmware in the same folder where the flasher is, I actually managed, and I have Lion 10.7.3 !!!

Thank you so much Puma - without that specific flasher (release 0.6 is not enough, there are many floating around)
I wouldn't have managed.
