not to be to harsh on you, but why can you not do it yourself? MCSE and the firmware download, patch it and flash. See MCSE site if you get stuck.

well, the MCSE part was indeed the easiest one :) I built the firmware I needed easily, but now I'm seriously stuck. you see, I don't run windows, I'm on linux (ubuntu 10.11)..
vmware and virtualbox both [*Profanity*] the optical drive passthrough (the drive is accessible but it identifies itself strangely which messes up with flasher). the only linux tool I found (LG Renesas Firmware Utility) doesn't have GU40N in the list of supported drives and, logically, doesn't seem to work (believe me, I was so desperate that I've tried.. :) ).
moreover, I can not install windows on my machine even temporarily because I don't have it, my Dell Latitude E6410 was bought with FreeDOS inside..
not to mention that wine, of course, doesn't work either.
so.. it kinda turned out not so fun as I thought it would, and I already ran out of options :) if you could advise me anything, I'd deeply appreciate it because I spent nearly all day digging this problem instead of studying for my exams :)))

I guess I was just stupid enough not to find it ? :) Sorry, can't help it, I'm REALLY not experienced at all in this, though have been reflashing my drives for years already. But take some file, click on it and it's good and done is one story, and try to figure out what exactly goes wrong when something finally does, is another. Will try the Devilscalws flasher tonight, thank you very much in advance. [and please bear with me a bit more, I was born totally blonde :D]

SavaSava, if you look at the last post in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=47776, you will find a newer A104 firmware for your drive which was extracted and then manually processed to a suitable form by DevilsClaw.

The only way around your Linux flashing problem is to create a suitable bootable USB DOS disc, boot from it and then use the DOS flasher from the above package to flash your drive.

You need to patch that firmware with MCSE, rename the file with the same name as the one in the original package and then replace the one in the original package with the patched file.

Another way would be if you can find somewhere on the net a custom Windows 'Bootable Live CD/USB' and try to flash your drive using that.

Alternatively you could take the drive out from your computer (which in most cases is as easy as removing a single s.c.r.e.w holding it in place and then puling it out) and then flash it on a friend's Windows machine perhaps via a slim SATA to USB adapter which you could get cheap enough from eBay or other sources ...

I can't see any other option ...

My flasher does not currently support flashing these drives since it uses a weird pre/post write operation per block. I am not sure if it changes or not for other firmwares/drives and I still have to research it.

I might have time this weekend to implement a workaround for this specific drive since I have the same one and the write operation should be the same.

wow, people, you are fast !
so, I woke up today to try DevilClaw's flasher just to discover that it was the same thing I've already tried, and I was going to give up. but it seems to me after the DevilClaw's post that there's still some hope left ! :)
so I'll wait patiently and cross my fingers ! :D

Why don't you simply use the DOS flasher that Dell ships in their firmware packages ?

well.. yeah, you are right ! :) did it just now, everything went fine and works like a charm so far. thank you for pushing me (i was somehow hesitant to use the DOS since the last time i saw it was in the end of nineties, but, well, it turned out i still remember everything that has to be remembered about it :) ). once again, thanks to everyone for your patience and advice ! =D>
