I had contacted Sony Optiarc - Europe about the issue, and I got the following reply today:

Dear Customer,
Thank you for your enquiry. Please note that your drive is an OEM product. Technical support for OEM products is done by the OEM
Manufacturers/Resellers.

Therefore, please get in touch with your PC/Notebook Manufacturer (DELL, Fujitsu-Siemens, HP...) for further information and support.

WARNING:OUR FIRMWARE UPDATES ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THOSE PROVIDED BY OEM VENDORS AND MANUFACTURERS (HP, DELL, FUJITSU-SIEMENS ETC.).THESE VERSIONS MAY DAMAGE YOUR DRIVE.

Hi:
Unfortunately there is no firmware update for the optical drive. Also it
does sounds like the recorder itself is faulty.

Regards,
Coaster

Myself, I consider it to be a Sony issue, rather than an OEM issue.

Anyway, I bought and installed myself an AD-7590S recorder and flashed it with its latest firmware update, today.

However for about 1 mm, the _screw_ holes of the new recorder and the laptop base did not fit, so as to bolt them together with a _screw_, and I used Logo super-glue instead.

I will begin testing the new recorder, but I have recorder stability concerns. Well, if I see it moving the answer will be more glue.

Edited:

The previous recorder (AD-7560S) had damaged the CD-RW media that it used, and the new recorder (AD-7590S) works OK with CD-RW media.

Is there any way to force the AD-7560S SS03 (Sony VAIO) firmware update, to my AD-7560S (firmware SX01) at my own risk?

http://www.x-mail.net/bigfoot/wally.html - here is the link to instruction how to force update firmware from SX01 to SX03.
But I have a BENQ joybook S42 also with Optiarc AD-7560S, its have a firmware SA01, some one tried to force update firmware with that instructions, with HEX modified firmware of SS03? I mean from SA01 to SA03?
