Hello, I also (very recently) bought the Acer Aspire 5738Z laptop.
I'm looking for a way to flash my DVD drive region-free (I succeeded previously with my IBM Thinkpad T42). The driveinfo for my DVD drive is exactly the same as the one posted on this thread.
To add, after searching on the net for a long time this thread is the only place someone actually discusses this problem (with spot-on driveinfo) and has successfully solved it.
Wd really appreciate it if someone can tell me where to download the file to flash my DVD drive pls? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I just successfully flashed my Acer Aspire 7540's drive (GT30N) using the Asus firmware, MCSE and a flasher I found after a long search, as the Asus supplied flasher didn't want to have anything to do with an Acer computer. I lost the link to the flasher, but as I don't like to see people in the same kind of trouble as I was in, I uploaded mine to rapidshare if it can help anyone. Here goes : http://rapidshare.com/files/386990864/F ... 8.exe.htmlGood luck with the patching, and thanks to all for all the drives you've helped me unlock through all these years.

^I can confirm this. The above Rapidshare link no longer works, but I grabbed the required 'FlashWinX118.exe' file from the package posted here and the ASUS ASS2 firmware posted on the previous page, patching with the latest MCSE. I have an Acer Aspire 5739G, and my drive firmware was previously 1.01.

Hello,
I can verify this works with the Gateway 1.01 version of this drive. ala42's recommendation of his software to patch the flasher will not correct the error for an alternate manufacturer. I also attempted a 'force' switch but it did not work. An application to open RAR files will be necessary if you download the recommended flasher from one of the few available search results.

Hello everybody! Sorry, I'm new, and I don't know where to write :/ I have an ASUS K50IJ-SX053D laptop, with a GT30N drive. It couldn't read written CD-s. ASUS adviced me to use the ASS2 f/w. I used. Since then, it couldn't read ANYTHING. What should I do?

You followed their advice, they are responsible for that then and have to solve your problem.

I realize this thread is long dead. I found it on a google search and I'm wanting to upgrade to LE12 as well, but unfortunately, both RapidShare links for the FlashWinX118.exe file are dead also. Could someone please re-post the file and provide a link for it? Thank you in advance!

I tried to use MCSE but it didn't appear to support the drive. I couldnt extract the firmware nor could I find an option to patch firmware files on my desktop.

Thank you in advance! what is wrong with the database file? use MCSE to patch the firmware and then flash it to the drive. http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=category&id=1879I'm running an Asus laptop which is not supported by the LE12's self extracting/self-installing flasher binary from the database since the one from the database is for a Lenovo. So I have to extract the .bin from the installer and use a third party flasher like FlashWinX118.exe to cross-flash. Sorry for not explaining that before. As for making a request, I wasn't specifically trying to make my drive region free -- just update to the latest available firmware; although the thought had crossed my mind once I found this forum.

Not sure what the problem was the other day but I was unable to do -anything- in MCSE the other day. It is working now, however. About to test patching the original firmware first, followed by the LE12 and then LD04 (which was released after LE12)

Sorry for the double post above. Since I'm still moderated, I can't edit my posts until they are approved. Now for the next edit.
I just discovered that if you hover over the executables in Windows, it shows the version of the actual patcher executable. The LD04 patcher, while being released Nov of this year is an earlier version than LE12's patcher.
Any idea which firmware is actually the later and more featureful revision since they are both GT30N firmwares?

Last one, I promise: So I just tried MCSE on the oem firmware for my laptop (ASS2) and it worked great to make it region free. So I downloaded the LE12 firmware from the DB and ran MCSE on it as well. Unfortunately, both the LE12 flasher and my oem flasher refuse to even start flashing the LE12 firmware to my drive, offering up the error "Invalid Buyer".

From what I read on this very site, the Asus drives can be cross-flashed with the Lenovo firmware. I'll have to try to dig up the thread where I read that, but I see no reason it can't be cross-flashed other than the fact that it's Lenovo vs Asus branding. The OEM-provided flasher binary is the same between the two, other than the fact that one has a higher version number.
Since [_chef_] locked the other topic I was replying in, I'll answer his question here. The place I read that my (this) drive uses a Panasonic chipset was on page 1 of this thread.

Have you tried flashing the patched LE12 *.bin firmware file using the FlashWinX118.exe flasher program? FlashWinX118.exe should work for OEM crossflashes because it is unlocked. According to its internal release date the LD04 firmware is in fact older than the LE12 firmware although it has been released more recently, so I'll stick with LE12.

I am also looking for the FlashWinX118.exe flasher. All the links I have found have expired, and my best Google-fu has turned up nothing. Can anyone reupload it? Thanks!

To make the post more relevant/on topic: For the above poster that was looking for FlashWinX118.exe to be able to crossflash (and thus region-free w/ MCSE) his GT30N, there is an alternative patched flasher that will work. The flasher was posted in the forums a while ago by devilsclaw. As devilsclaw explains, the flasher ignores vendor and buyer details, making a crossflash possible -- here is the link to the post: viewtopic.php?p=228036#p228036With the above flasher, I was able to crossflash the modified RPC1 GT30N LE12 firmware to my OEM Acer HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N firmware version 1.01. DISC Info version 1.7.0 now reports 'No Lock Detected' =) Edit: cvs via Club MyCE kindly pointed me to FlashWinX118.exe that he uploaded: http://www.mediafire.com/?w1b0ojk6y21pp4k This is exactly the same patched flasher linked above, except this is a a slightly older version -- 1.18, versus the one linked above that devilsclaw patched, which is version 1.24.
