Apparently I posted in wrong topic- didn't notice this hread from the start- conecering firmware upgrade for this thing here:

I'm not particularly interested in making it region free- although it's an added bonus- but in making it dual-layer capable ( read/write) in windows 7 . I found an executable firmware upgrade for XP originally from Panasonic - which apparently does that - but am skittish about attempting to upgrade in compatibility mode. Anyone know if:
- you can use compatibilty mode for stuff like this ?
- if this holds true for peripherals like a dvd drive ?
- if you can even use panasonic firmware to upgrade Matshita UJ 820D ?

the firmware I downloaded is this:

Have you read the mentioned threads/info in the first post??
You have an OEM drive, maybe from FSC, maybe from Sony, maybe someone else and you MUST use their firmware update if one exists.

Additions like DL capabilties are purely wishful thinking...

The thread you posted does not mention it would not be possible. It only says there is no firmware for it yet and it would take time.

You have to do it yourself as explained here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46246

I'm looking for a RPC1 update for my Matshita UJ-8A8 HB14 DVD-R drive

I have a late 2011 macbook pro, boot camp with windows 7 home premium 64bit.

I was in the middle of ripping my DVD's to ISO image files with Any DVD on my old macbook before it died and would like to continue so I can finally get rid of my discs.

I have searched the forums and then net and can't find anything windows related, so if there is any help that i have overlooked, please kindly point me to it, otherwise if this is a request that can be fulfilled, please let me know what I need to supply in order to get it done.

DiscInfo doesn't seem to work on my machine.

many thanks.

Read this thread, then you will know how Discinfo works or even dvdinfopro.

Without the requested info no one will profit....

You don't need an update for that. You can make your existing firmware RPC1 yourself as explained here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46246

Either its still a region problem or your DVDs have copy protections!!!

Sadly not for the BD part.

AnyDVD HD would be a good choice, but its doubtful if it does work with this drive.
You may try with the trial version. ;)

Do you know if this method will work with a Matshita UJ8A8A2ASW drive?

Thanks!

Since it worked on other UJ-8A8 drives, then yes it will work for yours too. Use the dump program and that will dump the firmware from your drive and also create the RPC1 file, and then use the RPC1 file in conjunction with the flasher program to make your drive RPC1.

Let us have a copy of the two firmwares as well.

Hi, I've read the FAQ and everything but I'm not sure if my drive is patchable. I have a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ8A2AS (UJ-8A2AS)?. I haven't seen anyone posting anywhere about this drive and no one with UJ-8A2 drives even. I see many of the UJ-8x series are easily patchable but I've no idea whether this one is.

Thank you!

Since it worked just fine for other UJ-8Ax series drives, I see no reason whatsoever why it shouldn't work for your drive too. It is a universal tool which works with all UJ-8x series Matshita drives (with the exception of the UJ-890 which seems to be somehow different than the rest and it doesn't work).

Use the dump program first, and if that successfully dumps the firmware from your drive and creates the RPC1 file then you're in business! Once you have your RPC1 file flash it to your drive using the flasher program and enjoy your RPC1 drive

Let us have a copy of the two firmwares as well please.

Brilliant, it worked perfectly. I just realized WMP doesn't work with RPC-1 drives but I don't care! I uploaded both versions of the firmware.

Cheers, guys!

Enjoy your RPC1 drive! :)
You can use VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) - it should work just fine and it is a very good player. Thanks for the firmwares!

Thanks, sorry not to reply for so long. I am traveling and don't want to take a chance of bricking my drive until I get back home. I will then flash the drive and upload the 2 firmwares as you asked!
