freeking awsm, it all worked great! i now have an rpc1 dvd drive!

just to summarise:

macbookpro 15", matshita uj-898 (hc09) drive

resorted to flashing in a winxp sp3 instance inside vmware fusion, as i am running osx 10.6.7. i used MatshitaWinDump_1.02, which at first didn't recognise the drive, but after fully shutting down and restarting the xp instance all was well. it did the dump fine, then i ran the MatshitaWinFlash program, as per the instructions on the first post of this thread, and it finished it's job ok.

one thing that gave me a moment's fright was: as soon as the MatshitaWinFlash program was done, vmware threw up a popup about my anti-virus, and "did i want to upgrade to mcafee?" (i am running avg) - innocuous enough but my xp instance had frozen and for a moment i thought i'd stuffed something up - but i suspended and restarted the instance and then everything was fine. dvdinfo reported an rpc1 drive. then i went back to osx, tried a region2 dvd in my region4 drive, got the "do you want to change your region" dialog that osx throws up. cancelled, then used Region X to switch to region 2, then played the dvd with no worries.

so, first of all, flashing my dvd drive inside vmware fusion on my macbookpro worked fine, if anyone else has to do the same thing.

secondly, should anti-virus software be disabled before flashing a drive? maybe that was mentioned somewhere in this thread but i haven't time to re-read all ten pages of posts again :)

and thirdly, *bug kudos* to all the folks who wrote this software, tested it, and run this forum, it's so great to be free of region-encoding shackles! do you guys take donations? maybe you have an amazon wishlist?

and lastly, is there anything you'd like me to post (eg, my dump files?)

THANK YOU!

donations are accepted, link is on the portal page. this goes for the forum server bills, not to a patcher. No nothing needed, enjoy your region free drive

Hi all,
I hope there is still someone out here, because I'm afraid I'm about to ask a stupid question. Sorry in advance...
but:
I ran the minidump, all fine. Now the instruction says: "Drop the firmware .dat file you want to flash on the MatshitaWinFlash.bat batch file."
I hope I'm just a little slow today, but where is that "firmware.dat? Its a Matshita UJ875s in a Dell XPS M1530 running Win 7 64bit Enterprise.

Thanks for the help...

run MatshitaWinDump. This will create two files, one will be the RPC1 firmware dat.

PLEASE! I'd like to know this too. Not to sound pushy or anything, but is ala42 any closer to working out a fix for this drive?

Crossflashing a matshita drive is absolutely no option.
You must realize that this slimtype drives have drive specific firmwares that are bound to the way the other devices within the computer are set up.
Why don't you get an slim external in case you really need an optical drive??

Hi, everyone here,

ala42, I know you wrote a year ago: "I have not figured out yet how to build a flashable file from the dump file for the older drives." Has something changed?

I have MATSHITA UJ-830S (fw1.80) . Although it's a legacy drive, it's almost new and is a part of my TOSH Satellite laptop. I suppose many users all over the world have same drives in laptops.

The problems are standard:
1. not a region-free drive
2. DVD rip speed is cruelly limited although it"s a x8 DVD drive
.

May WE ask YOU to spent some time to invent flashing of UJ-83x drives?

Many thanx in advance.

Rip speed is limited because its a slimtype drive - the hardware sets the limits in this case!

Hardly since it reads even burned data DVD+R (CMC MAG M01) with Average 6.01x and 7.98x at the End (Nero CD Speed Test4). Even better results on pressed DVD-Video (same test). I see no hardware limitation, but the Rip speed is 1.5x max. Rotten original FW

Test with pressed SL DVD and DL DVD and both types with and without encryption schemes....

What has that to do with this thread at all?
Your drive probably has a hardware problem which is NEVER fixable via software.
Clean the drive/lens by hand with isopropanol and a q-tip.

what am asking for is why the firmware is not applied on my Driver cuz of reason... ( i need to update the firmware from 1.0 )

and the reason why i did post my laptop info is to know about the version of windows and that it is x64

My
Code:
MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ890AS 1.00
Does Burn CD's But its Not burning DVD's so i need to update the firmware

No!
I already told you that this is no firmware problem, updating it (if there were an update!) gives nothing, nada, nichts!

lets forget about my burning Dvd problem and Focus on the firmware ...

the version 1.0 is the final for :
Code:
MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ890AS 1.00

No that is not what he is saying. What he is saying is that even if there is/was an update for your drive it wont fix your problem. There for there is no point in perusing a update until the other problem is fixed, if it is even possible to fix.

Exactly that. And "driver" is software, drive is hardware. Firmware is the missing link to make the hardware work at all.

As mentioned various times in this thread, your drive is not supported as of yet!
