Would anyone know what liteon firmware will work with my hp 1140d yh26? it will not recognize blank dvd's and it locks up the computer until i open the drive. I believe it uses mediatek MT1858 LL chipset. any help with this troublesome drive would be much appreciated. I downloaded and used the disc info after reading another post where a user's dvd writer couldn't read blank dvd's either. It said my drive was okay supposedlt but blanks still wont be read.reg. dvds and all cdr's and rw's are fine. Have you tried with different blank media and also with which specific media?
brand, specified speeds, DVD5 or DVD9?!?

Probably you should try cleaning the lens first.

I have to tell you that the media you mentioned is either sub par or no - name and not to be trusted in case of data integrity...
I suggest you get a Verbatim branded DVD-R or DVD+R and test burning to it using Imgburn, which is free.
Please post the logfile info from Imgburn then here.
Or even the logfile from Nero, if you prefer that.

i ran the nero test on nero 7 info tool,it wouldn't do anything on the drive speed test or any other test for that matter with any blank dvd inserted.I used a blank hp dvd +r.I use hp cd-r's to burn cd's with and it works fine but sometimes i have to put the burnt data file cd-r's in the bottom regular cd drive to copy the infor mation back to my computer.the hp drive sometimes says "there was a problem copying....blah blah blah...it still just sits there and acts like theres no media in the drive when blank dvd's of any type are inserted.it doesnt list a driver being installed for the dvd burner on nero's cd/dvd speed program.I'm sorry to kep bugging you,but hp is no help and im wondering if i just need the oem installation software for it or if i should just give up and just try to afford a new one.Thank you for your help in any case...Steve

Steve,

its possible that the dvd laser part/unit is burned out.
To find that out, I would try to boot from a bootable dvd. Also I would test this drive in another computer to rule other hardware & software problems out.
If you can, replace the data cable to your drive. Sometimes it is just defective and generation all kind of weird issues.

okay sorry chef but i dont have a bootable dvd but changed ide cable, set jumper to master and unhooked the secondary drive, snuck a blank dvd into nero cd dvd drive tool while it was starting up and although it ran poorly,i got some info to show ya.also, the bitsetting tab gave me the option to set them to dvd rom (for dvd+r and dvd+rw) but i left them to match what was in the drive....look right to me but im not a computer guru at all... Ouch, either this drive hates that discs or it has really a serious hardware / driver error.
I'm a bit out of ideas, I would just go forward and try with another burner....
