I've always said that the sign of a good administrator is that they can see the perspective of those they are administering. Or are you guys from the Genghis Khan school of administration? You have no basis for doubting how much I have read But you might understand that I read it with an eye different from yours
"Thanks for the help"

"Thanks for the help" its adminstration asking a member to read 1 or 2 pages back. if you have a problem, then don't bother coming here. That attitude is crap frankly.

A question... This is my drive MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E: Firmware Revision: ZB0E "- Region free firmwares are not patches to an existing firmware, but full firmwares. Unless explicitly stated, your current firmware doesn't matter, you may run the updater without worrying. You can update from a firmware to another without any intermediate steps, e.g. from an AA17 to an AX24 without applying the AA24 update first." The version isn't the same as the one on the first page, is it safe to flash with it? (Yes, I read the faq, it says that I can, but I'm paranoid about losing my drive so I'm asking anyway.) I tried running the app for my firmware revision from viewtopic.php?f=30&t=43082 but it won't run because I'm running on Mac OSX 10.5.

Just wanted to say I found this thread through googling, and have successfully used ben11's firmware to flash my drive as RPC1. Many thanks to ben11 and this forum and admins, it's much appreciated

As requested on the original post: My drive - Matshita UJ-898 HC10 MacBook Pro Mac OS X 10.6.7
To whom it may concern, I followed the step-by-step instructions as best i could from ala42 to patch my DVD-drive's firmware, however i get this error: simple_flash V 2.01 compiled at Feb 4 2010 00:22:16 Selected firmware: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898 HC10 Selected device: M4PToMP3Virtual CD-RW 2.11 fatal: Selected device does not match firmware
My system recognizes two DVD-drives: the Matshita UJ-898 HC10 and the M4PToMP3Virtual CD-RW (a virtual drive for unlocking music purchased on iTunes). I want to get MatshitaFlasher to select the UJ-898 drive, not the M4P... virtual drive. Any suggestions? I'm willing to delete the M4P... app from my system, but as a last resort. Plus, i'm not even sure if that would fix it (deleting an app = deleting a virtual drive created by an app?). Thanks, Regards, koriwawa

I unistalled the M4P... app and it got rid of the virtual DVD drive. I checked the System Profiler. Then i retried dropping the UJ-898_HC10_Stock_RPC1.dat file into MatishaFlasher. The Terminal shows this: simple_flash V 2.01 compiled at Feb 4 2010 00:22:16 Selected firmware: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898 HC10 fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device
Why is the selected drive null? Thanks for the help, guys.

Cut and pasted from DVD Info X: DVD Info X v1.0.2, by xvi (xvi@rpc1.org)
WARNING --- DVD Info X will only list DVD drives that have some WRITE capabilities, like combos, DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc... DVD-ROM-only drives will NOT be listed. WARNING --- You also must eject any inserted medium to list the drive.Yes, Puma, i did reboot it after i deleted the M4P... app, before i tried to flash my drive. By the way, i saw there this or a very similar issue was discussed on page 14. As far as i could tell, it wasn't really resolved. If i missed something, forgive me for re-posting the same question. Thanks for the help, guys, koriwawa

Puma wrote: koriwawa wrote: Puma, what does that DVD Info X stuff mean? Why does MatshitaFlasher say my drive is null? Thanks, koriwawa it should list the drive you have, make sure you have no disc inserted. Right. There was no disc inserted. I tried DVD Info X again just now to make sure. Same message appeared. Thanks for your patience. If it's helpful, i copied the following info from System Profiler > Hardware > Disc Burning: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898:
Firmware Revision: HC10 Interconnect: ATAPI Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive) Cache: 0 KB Reads DVD: Yes CD-Write: -R, -RW DVD-Write: -R, -RW Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refreshand this is from System Profiler > Hardware > Serial-ATA > Intel 5 Series Chipset: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898:
Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898 Revision: HC10 Serial Number: UK30 390J5G Native Command Queuing: No Detachable Drive: No Power Off: Yes Async Notification: NoDoes that help? Is it possible to enter the command to flash my drive manually from Terminal (without Matshita Flasher)? If so, how?.

Okay, i successfully downgraded to OS X 10.6.4.
I retried dropping UJ-898_HC10_RPC1.dat into MatshitaFlasher. This is what it said:
simple_flash V 2.01 compiled at Feb 4 2010 00:22:16 Selected firmware: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898 HC10 Could not open device
logout
[Process completed]
In case you wanted, i also ran DVD Info X:
Vendor: MATSHITA Model: DVD-R UJ-898 Firmware: HC10 RPC-2 (region locked) State is PERMANENT 4 vendor resets left 0 region change left Region 2
I take it MatshitaFlasher still didn't work right. Now what do i do? Thanks again, koriwawa

So, i'm not sure what happened, since i downgraded to OS X 10.6.4, restarted my computer, ran MatshitaFlasher, and got nowhere... again. So this morning, i said what the heck, i'll try MatshitaFlasher again. Couldn't hurt. I'm a very happy to say that it worked! I don't know why, but it did. My thanks to all the personal help with this task to help me, a new Mac user, particularly to Puma and the writers of the downloads available on this forum. Sincerely, koriwawa
PS. If there is a tip jar on PayPal or something, let me know.
