Use the dump and flash programs as instructed and you can make your drive region free very easily. Once you do it, let us have a copy of your original and RPC1 firmware. Please note that if your MAC OS version is 10.6.5 or 10.6.6, the programs won't work - you'll either have to downgrade your OS version to a pre-10.6.5 version or do it under Windows using the equivalent Windows versions of these tools from here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46246&st=0&sk=t&sd=a.

I believe that's the same firmware revision that's on the 15" MacBook Pro too, although i've managed to get an Optiarc drive one. If you can dump the firmware, it'll save me having to sneakily do it in my local Apple Store

Excellent! Just zip the two files up and upload the file to a free host such as http://www.mediafire.com and then post the link in here. Thank you!

Hi there. Thanks for reading. I have followed all above instructions. Have run DVD Info X app. Tells me I do have Matshita UJ 868 KB19 Matshita Flasher downloaded the rpc-1 dat dragged ontoit. But then Message appears:
simple_flash V 2.01 compiled at Feb 4 2010 00:22:16 Selected firmware: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-868 KB19 Could not open device logout [Process completed]
Before I ran the dump - maybe I shouldn't have!
As now the entire drive is no longerfunctioning. Sorry for the incompetence!
Needy,
Chrish
Earliest ttrial it aborted, sighting that the drive does not seem to be a Matshita.
have a 2 yo MacBook Pro and am running Snow Leopard.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I thought I'd had issues with 10.6.6 but it turned out to be something else instead. I wonder if the drive has gone into recovery mode? Easiest way to check is to boot up the laptop, open up System Profiler in /Applications/Utilities , then select "Disc Burning" on the left hand menu.
Tell us if it comes up with anything. If not, also check the ATA and/or Serial-ATA sections to see if the drive is still listed. It may just require a reflash. Hopefully.

Possible problems are you have no root permission or another program is blocking the drive.

Hi ala42, I just bought a UJ-875(that was labeled on the drive) from the net, and when I plugged into my Mac, it shows UJ-85JA with a firmware version 1.02. it is currently an RPC-2 drive, and I have created a dump out of it, would appreciate if you could take a look at it and work out a RPC-1 Firmware for my little baby which will find a way into my Santa Rosa MBP 17". And here's the dump : http://rapidshare.com/files/455108564/M ... dump_0.datThanks a lot for your help! Anson

I will combine them in a zip file once I have success in flashing my drive into RPC1. However, at this stage, the link provided is broken so I can't get hold of the test software which ala42 helped. Am working with him now and see if I could get hold of it tonight and test it. Will keep all of you posted.

I wonder if anyone of you can help me please as i think it's not worth to spend 100 euros in apple to solve the problem

Doesn't sound like it worked right. Why not try making your own firmware using the flash dumping tool first? Then use the one it creates and see if that works?

Does anyone know if the flash software will be available for OSX 10.6.6?
They have already released 10.6.7 but I'm holding out updating until I can flash the drive in 10.6.6.

Hi Great thread - but Tried as instructed on my MacBook Pro (running OSX 10.6.7) with a Mathsita UJ-898 HE13
When I dropped the .dat file onto MatshitaFlasher 0.6 Terminal gave me the following message: line 8: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"' line 9: syntax error: unexpected end of file
Does that mean that the .dat file was faulty? Or that I have to do it under windows (ugh!) Many thanks Chris
