Hi! I really need some help!!! This has been frustrating for me. I have a Macbook Pro which was recently updated to the 2011 Snow Leopard 10.6. Recently I brought Rosetta Stone Totale. However, whenever i try to insert the CD-ROM to install, the computer just ejects the CD and never reads it. The Mac doesn't seem to have any problems with ready any other disc just the Rosetta Stone. When I called Rosetta customer service they explained that I have to have the Matshita disc burner updated. The specs read: Hardware Overview: Model Name: MacBook Pro Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 3 MB Memory: 4 GB Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B05 SMC Version (system): 1.33f8 Serial Number (system): W88495751G0 Hardware UUID: D98DF7D3-5078-5399-A2C5-20118ADE3CAC Sudden Motion Sensor: State: EnabledI do Have the MatshitaFlash app. I'm not too sure what I must do in order to have the disc burner updated. Can someone please help me?

If they think so, they should be able to tell you which official Apple update is needed. If they do not even ask you for your exact drive model and firmware revision, ask for a new disk or return the stuff and get your money back.

@ala42: The problem is i just need to update the Matishita but Apple can't help me and neither can Rosetta. I don't have apple care with Apple so even though from what I heard they can tell me exactly what to download, they wont without me having the apple care I just got off the phone with Rosetta. I'm just so frustrated with dealing with this same issue and no one has been able to help me

The newer version of "Region X" there, does nor work for me... but the previous v1.6 does work fine. I had a similar problem with the latest version of Region X not working on my MacBook Pro, but as I was making a friend's MacBook region-free, I accidentally discovered that by restarting the computer, the latest Region X DID work. Now it works on mine, too. Therefore, I recommend restarting your Mac to see if this solves the problem for you. Denny

Thank you everyone! I have already have restarted my computer frequently and it still doesn't work (==) However I will give it a try with seeing how it works on other computers. If it still doesn't work then I'll just return the program...and if it does then i'm going to get my money back for my macbook!(>_<)

I'm picking up a new MacBook Pro in the USA next week while I visit. (I'm not paying UK prices for one!)
Assuming the firmware dumper still works, is ala42 or anyone else still patching firmwares? If so, i'll gladly dump the drive for you.
I understand the brand new macs all have newer drives than the UJ-898 in the previous generation.

I've just got back from my local Apple Store. The new 15" MacBook Pro's are still using the UJ-898 but with a HE15 (I think) firmware. Either way, i'll end up dumping it soon.

I can't dump the new 15" MacBook Pro's drive. The one i've picked up has an Optiarc AD-5970H drive installed.

I've posted a new thread on that. No reason to clutter this one up any further. If you want a matshita firmware dump, i'll have to sneakily use an apple store laptop at some point

hi, sorry to not have read all 14 pages, but i have the same issue as TTXX above (but in english). Nonetheless, the process doesn't recognize the drive as a Matshita, even though it is listed as one in the system profiler (listed below).
must be dong something wrong. any ideas?
the process seemed very simple, even to me. the terminal screen that popped up listed this:
Last login: Wed Mar 2 09:19:19 on console /Users/joe/Desktop/MatshitaFlasher.app/Contents/Resources/call_simple_flash ; exit; [jsatriano:~] joe% /Users/joe/Desktop/MatshitaFlasher.app/Contents/Resources/call_simple_flash ; exit;
calling simple_flash with firmware file /Users/joe/Desktop/UJ-898_HD10_Stock_RPC1/UJ-898_HD10_RPC1.dat
simple_flash V 2.01 compiled at Feb 4 2010 00:22:16 Selected firmware: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898 HD10 fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device
logout
[Process completed]
here is teh info from the System Profiler, it is a Matshita according to this:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898:
Firmware Revision: HC10 Interconnect: ATAPI Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive) Cache: 1024 KB Reads DVD: Yes CD-Write: -R, -RW DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

Any other ideas, apart from pulling out the DVD drive and installing it in another machine which *can* be downgraded to 10.6.4? I'm in no desperate rush - I won't be using the DVD drive much for now - but it would be good to patch it some day!

Flashed the dvd drive on my Macbook Pro (late 2010 - Snow Leopard 10.6) using UJ898 HC10 RPC1 patch but it didn't appear to make any changes.Terminal window indicated my Matshita drive didn't appear to be typical and gave a null return. DVD info X3 indicates drive is still region 2 locked with 4 changes remaining. The drive, however, still seems to be fine.

I expect if you tell Terminal not to close windows when the shell exits, you'll see that the flasher failed to run - looks like they don't (for now) believe the drive is the right kind of target under 10.6.5 or 10.6.6.

This ended up being my solution on an early-2011 Macbook Pro 13": - get a Windows 7 install DVD - use Boot Camp to install Windows 7 - run the Windows-based firmware dump-and-patch utilities - delete Boot Camp partition
Not the most efficient perhaps, but at least it works!
