I've bought a Laptop for my wife and urgently need a RPC1 firmware
'cause she loves to order DVDs in the USA/Canda.

DiscInfo is not working on the laptop with WIndows 7.
It tells me that I don't habe administrative rights and causes a EAViolation error.
I AM admin on that device.

Any other tools I could use?

You don't have the necessary permissions then....

You may try with dvdinfopro.

By default Win 7 doesn't run a program with Admin rights even if the account you run the program from is an Admin account. To run the program with Admin privileges right click on the discinfo.exe file and click Run as administrator. That will run the program with full Admin rights.

Alternatively try this (see the Firmware Request tread in Puma's signature):

DiscInfo usage for Windows 7 (32/64)Bit: This might also work on Vista
1. Find the discinfo exe.
2. Right click exe
3. Click Properties
4. Find Compatibility Tab at the top and click it
5. Click checkbox "Run this program in compatibility mode"
6. In the dropdown select Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
7. Click ok
8. Run discinfo and provide the info to your respective post

At point 6 you can also tick the box at the bottom which says Run as administrator, and then the program will always run with Admin rights.

After creating a different Admin account I was able to run DVDInfo pro.
Don't know it did not work before!?!?!

Here are the Infos I was able to get from my HP 625 Laptop:

OK, there's bad news and good news ...

The bad news is that there doesn't seem to be any OEM firmwares out for the TS-L633N at all ... worse still, since your drive is an HP OEM the chance of getting a firmware update from HP any time soon is rather slim to none (reason being that HP rarely provide any firmware updates for notebook drives)...

The good news is that the TS-L633N is an OEM version of the SN-S083N retail drive, and Samsung has just released firmware SB02 for it in mid December, so if you're willing to void your warranty for the drive (assuming your laptop is still under warranty) you can crossflash your drive to the real thing, and make it RPC1 in the process You won't be able to go back to the TS-L633N firmware though, since there is none available and there's no way to dump the existing firmware from Samsung drives.

If you want to go ahead with the crossflash, this is what you need to do:

1. Go to Samsung and download the SN-S083N SB02 firmware: http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/Firmware/ ... wnload.asp
2. Download the Samsung stand alone flasher: http://www.samsungodd.com/KorLib/File/tsdnwin.exe
3. Download ala42's MCSE: http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/
4. Extract the SN-S083N_SB02.bin firmware file from the Samsung flasher you downloaded by using WinRar/WinZip
5. Load the SN-S083N_SB02.bin file in MCSE, click the RPC1 box and save it as SN-S083N_SB02_speedpatched.bin
6. Start the tsdnwin.exe flasher from a command line with the -nocheck parameter: tsdnwin -nocheck
7. Once the flasher opens, load the speedpached firmware in it and then flash your drive.
8. Reboot when asked and enjoy your new RPC1 drive!

I have finally managed to RPC1 my HP TS-L633N after 6 months of looking for a way to do so.
The crossflash worked fine, and your instructions were perfect, especially for someone who has never flashed a TSSTcorp Drive before, and has never crossflashed a drive before (I have flashed/RPC1ed some drives - LGs/HL-DLs - before though).
The drive used to identify itself as a "hp CDVDW TS-L633N 0300".
It now identifies itself as a "TSSTcorp CDVDW SN-S083N SB02".

Could I just confirm that the drive is now (at least software-wise) an SN-S083N, and can now have any SN-S083N firmware flashed to it?

Also: An interesting side-effect of this crossflash is that it seems to remove the riplock (speed up from 1.8x-2.2x to 2.0x-9.0x during read of a DVD-Video), even though I never chose to remove it (in fact I don't even think MCSE gave me the option to remove it!).

Excellent! Yes, from now on you can flash your drive the normal way with any SN-S083N firmware Samsung will release in the future ... as far as any Samsung firmware update program is concerned, your drive is now a genuine retail SN-S083N

It might be that the retail version of the drive hasn't got any riplock, unlike its OEM counterparts ...

cvs: Wonderful. I have just noticed my drive has gained DVD-RW DL support...
It seems that the OEM firmwares are significantly different to retail.
Here's hoping for SB03 with DVD+RW DL support.


It's not your fault - DiskInfo has never been able to see my TS-L633N, both before and after the crossflash (It can see my HL-DL-ST GE20LU10 though?!?!).
Just follow the instructions cvs wrote and it will work fine. Good luck.

Yes, OEM firmwares are often known to have all sorts of restrictions, although nowadays things are getting a bit better, they don't have as many limitations as they used to have a couple of years ago ...

Useless "feature", you will not even be able to buy such media.

I did wonder why I couldn't find any RW DLs when I was shopping for some writable DL discs.
A quick google says that some companies have developed them, but they are not in production.
Looks like Verbatim DVD+R DLs for me then.

cvs i have just registered on here so that i could post to thank you for this brilliant information.

I had just bought a client a Compaq Presario CQ56-111SA Laptop and it was suffering with audio cd distortion when being played back in the HP TS-L633N dvd writer. Interestingly only with Warner Bros audio CD's!

This was driving me mad and i'd already sent the original laptop back to the supplier believing the optical drive to be faulty.

I couldn't believe it when the replacement had the same problem! I tried updaing all the drivers, bios, etc and assumed it was a problem with the Realtek HD audio chip as others had mentioned online had issues in Windows 7.

I started to think it might be drive that was at fault, but i plugged in a Samsung external SE-S084 but it had the same distortion issues! It wasn't until i searched further on this HP TS-L633N that i found this post and by updating the firmware it has solved the audio distortion issues!

I'm so grateful and really wanted to say a massive thank you!

hi, i am having this same problem. certain cds just play distorted.

want to try updating the firmware as you have but i am not used to this laptop yet.

this may sound stupid but where can i find the discinfo.exe file to start the process??

Yes it will, if you use the appropriate firmware for your drive.

In your case you've got two choices: you can use either the TS-L633M SC01 firmware (http://www.samsungodd.com/korLib/popup/ ... M_SC01.exe) or better still you can use the retail equivalent firmware for your drive which is the SN-S083M SB02 (http://www.samsungodd.com/korLib/popup/ ... M_SB02.exe).

Just follow the process outlined previously and you're in business
