Hallo all, I think about buying this drive so I cannot give You any data right now other then the specs.
Can I use the Matschita firmware? You know it's simply the only slim IDE Blue Ray Burner.
I was told that it would have firmware 1.0 on it and Panasonic just serves firmware to oems and the oem firmware wouldn't be compatable with it. It would burn normal BD-R but not LTH-Type BD-R. I want to use it with Dell Precision M6300. Can You help me?
I use it in Europe. Codefree would be nice, sure.
Yours sincerely, Jelges

Sony seems to be the main OEM with firmware updates for the UJ-220 and UJ-225 drives. Here's the latest UJ-220 firmware v1.05 (use Google to translate it). http://vcl.vaio.sony.co.jp/download/EP0000203289.htmlIf your UJ-220 drive is not recognized by the Sony firmware updater, you will need to get familiar with some software developer tools (WinHex, WinDbg) to pull it off. In this thread, I initially updated my non-Sony UJ-225 drive with the Sony UJ-225 firmware...later I figured out how to trick the UJ-220 firmware updater too. viewtopic.php?p=229446#p229446Also Panasonic/Matshita drives are known for being almost impossible to make region-free...even with software like AnyDVD[-HD]. I say almost because I saw a couple of firmwares that were reverse engineered and made region-free, but that list was very small.

I wonder WHY you would buy and use such a crappy drive?! For your Laptop the options are (from Dell): Quote: Modular Options: 24X CD-RW/DVD, 8X DVD +/- RW8, DVD-ROM, Blu-Ray Region free for the BluRay part is not about to happen, only rpc1 for the dvd part would be an option. Buy an external BD burner and you'll be happy, I'm sure.

I have a UJ-220 in my laptop with firmware 1.0. I get the message from the Updater EP0000203289.exe "The F/W loader does not apply to the drive that you are using". With my UJ-220S in my desktop computer it was working. do you have a simple solution to update my UJ-220 drive?

You must either follow what I did or find the proper OEM firmware for your UJ-220 (if one exists).

If you read my post above, you'll see this link where I specifically describe how to trick the Sony UJ-220S firmware updater. But in retrospect, you should read the entire thread starting at this post.

Hallo again, I now have a Matshita MLT UJ-220 with Sony Firmware 1.05. It still doesn't work with AnyDVD and it is set to region 1. I need it to be region 2. But I would it like to be region free. Is there anything possible to get this drive region free? (Firmware attached).
Thanks.

Hi, I sucessfuly crossflashed my BD UJ-220 WDB1 v1.0 to Sony BD-MLT UJ-220S BSX1 V1.05
Here is my original header:
4D4154534849544100554A2D32323020505247204C44522020003030333300303130360030303030003030303400312E303020202020004D415453484954412042442D524520554A2D323230
MATSHITA UJ-220 PRG LDR 0033 0106 0000 0004 1.00 MATSHITA UJ-220
00330106000000041
I followed the thread on the UJ-225 crossflash and found that once you eject the tray and hit F5 3 times and F10, Shift+F11 (in the steps to debug), the update utility will load all the OEM information from your drive for comparison with the white list.
I then replaced all my OEM header info with the HEX information below... it was easy, just search for your firmware version. 1.00 (what I did), or for the WDB1 manufacturer ID. Be sure to properly compare the data you are writing as there are 4 distinct headers that are in various locations. Once all 4 segments are done, save in WinHex if you do not have automatic save. You can then remove 'kernel32!DeviceIoControl' in WinDbg continue with F5.
Note: The text I have placed under the HEX code will not work in copying as some of the HEX does not translate to typed text.
You will need to perform 4 searches for variations of your OEM header. I think my HEX information is in proper order, though you will need to check carfully how they fit before writing.

@tqhoang Your welcome! ) I did not get my drive until a week before I saw how to flash Panasonic UJ225 with Sony thread. I would have hacked this a lot sooner when the threads were more active, but I had no need for Bluray at the time. My 7 year old laptop did not have the option, and the Panasonic seemed best compared over the limited PATA drives you can get. I have no regrets, out side of the 50 el cheap-o DVD+R blanks the Panasonic UJ-220 won't write to. Though I hacked my Pioneer DVD writer to be RPC1 and updated its compatibility list for blanks. ) I also found that FFdshow setup on MPC plays BD well and does not give me the incompatible video card issues as with any other BD software. )

Thank you for this information Wormboy!
You're instructions worked perfectly! I had a POS Dell Matshita-RE UJ-220 which was pretty much useless since it failed to read the majority of new commercial Blu-ray discs. After flashing the Sony v1.05 firmware I'm now able to read those previously "unreadable" discs. I can't thank you enough.
