Same drutil output as CountVirgo too

Im also having problems (unrelated?) when trying to install windows with bootcamp since 10.6.5 too, errors reading the disc at various points through the install process, this is what lead me to try and flash a different firmware yesterday

I'm getting the same result, except I have HC09 firmware.

Hi everybody,

I also have 10.6.5, and when running DVD Info X the only message I get is:

DVD Info X v1.0.2, by xvi (xvi@rpc1.org)

WARNING --- DVD Info X will only list DVD drives that have some WRITE
capabilities, like combos, DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc...
DVD-ROM-only drives will NOT be listed.
WARNING --- You also must eject any inserted medium to list the drive.

As if I had a wrong DVD drive, or had any disc inside, or had done some mistake.

BEFORE updating to 10.6.5, DVD info X ran perfectly, so I flashed my drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ867A Firmware revision: KK08) and happily enjoyed my RPC-1 drive for some months.

Now, my question is, if DVD info X doesn't work anymore with 10.6.5, and as jundging from the previously posted messages, the flashing process doesn't either, couldn't it be that Region X isn't functioning well anymore? What if Region X isn't able to reset the counter?

I too have a 13: Macbook Pro with a Matshita UJ-898 HC10 drive... patched to RPC1. Me too am seeing the same problems reported with both the Matshita Flasher and DVD Info X after updating to OS X 10.6.5. DVD Info X can see fine an external RPC1 drive, but not the patched Matshita.

On a 15" Macbook Pro also with OS X 10.6.5 and an unpatched Matshita UJ-867 DVD Info X is able to display the drive info fine...

Region X, which resets the region counter in OS X is working fine. What is unusual is that when launched it asks me for my administrative password — even though my account already has the administrator privilige... was that true before, I don't recall?

I use region X to first set the Region "1", played a region 1 disc fine... used Region X again to set the region to "2" and inserted a region-2 disc... it played right away without any problem.

I ran across some reports of folks being unable to burn DVDs under OS X 10.6.5... but that's not true for me, I am burning one such disc fine on my patched Matsushita UJ-898 drive.

Edit: On my 15: Macbook Pro with OS X 10.6.5 and unpatched Matshita drive, both DVD Info X and matshita_mem_dump work fine... but on my smaller Macbook pro similarly configured and with a *patched" Matsushita both the info and dump utilities can't find the drive... it's as if a patched drive can't be quite identified -- though it still works fine for reading and writing!

Hi -- and great work on cracking this!

However I am encountering a problem and can't work out why? Sorry if this has been covered earlier, I did look but was unable to find it?

MacBook Pro 13" OS X - 10.6.5

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898:

Firmware Revision: HC10
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 1024 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

Downloaded MatshitaFlasher + UJ-898_HD10_RPC1.dat

Drag-Dropped into Flasher and got this response:
___________________________________________________________________________________
MacBook:~ andrewcole$ /Users/andrewcole/Downloads/MatshitaFlasher.app/Contents/Resources/call_simple_flash ; exit;

calling simple_flash with firmware file /Users/andrewcole/Desktop/UJ-898_HD10_RPC1.dat

simple_flash V 2.01 compiled at Feb 4 2010 00:22:16
Selected firmware: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-898 HD10
fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device

logout

[Process completed]
_______________________________________________________________________________________

Any ideas what I've done wrong, or why "fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device".

Thanks!

I have the exact same problem! I have a MATSHITA UJ-868 drive and running on Mac OSX 10.6.5, I have tried to run the DVD Info X app and came out with the same output as you. I have also tried to flash it, with no luck and the following error:
Code:
fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device

Is there any solution for this? Because I would really like to enjoy region free player.

Thanks,
Russian

To all involved: THANK YOU. I have just used your firmware on my UJ-867 HA13 drive which had been enslaved for years, and now it is free. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but the forums confused me a bit. I have donated to your paypal so your servers can get food and water and so on, and again, thank you!

That makes me at least think that all the work within this forum is worth to be continued. :)

I have a Matshita DVD-R UJ-868. I downloaded matshitaflasher and dropped the RPC1 firmware onto it. The terminal window is showing the following error.

Last login: Fri Dec 3 02:43:18 on ttys000
/MatshitaFlasher.app/Contents/Resources/call_simple_flash ; exit;
You have mail.
Basujit-Chakravartys-MacBook-Pro:~ basujitchakravarty$ /MatshitaFlasher.app/Contents/Resources/call_simple_flash ; exit;

calling simple_flash with firmware file /UJ-868_KB19_Stock_RPC1/KB19_rpc1.dat

simple_flash V 2.01 compiled at Feb 4 2010 00:22:16
Selected firmware: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-868 KB19
fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device

logout

[Process completed]

What am I doing wrong here??

Also, DVD Info X doesn't show any data. It just shows the following:

DVD Info X v1.0.2, by xvi (xvi@rpc1.org)

WARNING --- DVD Info X will only list DVD drives that have some WRITE
capabilities, like combos, DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc...
DVD-ROM-only drives will NOT be listed.

There seems to be a compatibility problem with MacOS 10.6.5. If you can run Windows programs, use the Windows version of the flasher.

I downgraded to mac osx 10.6 using the install dvd. Matshitaflasher worked perfectly and I have a RPC 1 drive now. Now, if I upgrade back to 10.6.5 will dvd region x be reset the region settings counter?

Hello,

Well, I tried to patch my UJ-868 but the flasher application ran and ended by letting me know the device was not a Matshita...I live in France and was sooo glad I'd finally found a solution to watch all my favorite DVDs.
What happened? Do you think I could have another DVD player in my machine than the one that specified in the info about my mac?
Please help, I'm so disappointed!

Thanks

@polena

What was the exact message you got after you ran the flasher? Are you by any chance on Mac OSx 10.6.5?

Hey Monty7,

I guess I am on the wrong version of OS. Now I have the same question as the previous user : if I downgrade, flash and then reupgrade, will it fix the problem?
I've never had to downgrade my OS, is it simple?

Thanks

I guess you're the previous user

Did you re-upgrade?

Does the de-install require any special process to protect my data?

Thanks

I think I have seen a report here that RegionX also does not like MacOS 10.6.5. Can someone confirm this ?

It seems to be working fine on Mac OSX 10.6.5. I have tried changing the region quite a few times and its still on 4 tries left. So alls well i guess?

I had downgraded to OSX 10.6 using the install dvd. All data still remained as is and only the OS version was changed. Reupgraded using software update after flashing the dvd with matshitaflasher.

Can you provide a conversion of earlier published firmware update (RPC-1) for:

Vendor: MATSHITA
Model: DVD-R UJ-857E
Firmware: ZB0E

It has been released in a previous post, but I cannot install it in 10.6.4

Thanks a lot!

You have to supply more details, which post do you mean ?

In this thread, the firmware update for the DVD drive mentioned can be downloaded, however it doesn't work in 10.6.4 and it needs a conversion apparently.

Read the first post of this thread again, especially
Quote:
If you want to flash the firmwares embedded in one of the old packages released by ben11, drop the old flasher app, e.g. "Update HAEA to region free" on the MatshitaFlasher application. The script will find the firmware automatically, which usually is in the Contents/PlugIns/?????.staple/Contents/MacOS subdirectory.

Got it working.

Region X didn't work in order to specify a Region, but DVD player did that job now without problems.

Thanks!
