I own quite a few hybrid AudioCD/SACD discs and hope to play the SACD layer of those discs with my computer. SACDs are essentially DVDs with various optional encryption features and an apparently messed up TOC to make sure the DVD layer is rejected by "normal" DVD drives. I know that one person managed to read the SACD layer of such a hybrid disc, screenshots are here: http://www.mindspring.com/~insomniaskunk/sacd/ . The SACD used there was BluesQuest, maybe it uses only a subset of the available encryption features. Are there any DVD drives (burners or simple readers) which can be told "give me the data of the DVD layer of a hybrid CD/DVD even if the DVD TOC is garbage"? Would such a feature need firmware patching? Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Scarlet Book (SACD standard)? My apologies if this post should be in another section of the board. Please move it if that is the case.

I got the report about reading a SACD with regular drives here: http://www.ps3sacd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=73That said, do you know any drive which has a well-understood firmware and could be reprogrammed easily to prefer the DVD layer? I don't mind buying one, and I don't mind losing burning capability in the process.

Sorry, thats really above my knowledge about optical drives/firmware. Maybe a more knowledgeable person could give some info...

Firmware patching, and also possible disc hot swapping, with particular drives.
PM me for info.
(I can't share the full info in public right now...)

It's the beginning of 2012. Surely there have been some advancements made. Does anyone have any new methods of going about this, or anything in general?

What with the success of the PS3 ripping method, the interest (by both sacd ripping developers and users alike) isn't high regarding this now. I agree with you though, I did hot swapping with certain drives to successfully read and copy NON-encrypted parts of the SACD disc (TOC files and the like, see here - links gone now but I won't go to effort of reuploading them), and it seems possible (although difficult, but not out of the capabilities of the ps3 dude), that with firmware modification, the encrypted parts could also be read and copied in unencrypted form. it MAY require also reverse-engineering the 40+40-bit encryption, but it's quite similar to DVD's CSS and is very basic and is thus also not impossible.....it's just very very time-consuming. So again....not much interest now that the PS3 method does it anyway.

@chef that's ok. I just thought that maybe he knew some information that I didn't (which would be unlikely, unless there were fresh developments - I'm not involved actively anymore since Mr_Wicked provided a good enough solution with the PS3 method).....
