This tutorial was created by me because so many people need the MCSE tool and have to go through the hassle of either finding a computer with Windows, installing a virtual machine with windows or using bootcamp to dual boot. This tutorial requires none of that but it still requires something else which should be easier.

You will need WINE which stands for Wine Is not a emulator. WINE creates a windows environment so that you can run windows applications with out windows.
For the Mac you can get the prebuilt version from the link below:
http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/

and you will need MCSE which can be found from this post:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=41228

Step 1 (Install WINE):
1) Open the dmg file which will pop up a window in that window
2) Drag the Wine Icon to the Applications Icon
3) Do the Same for WineBottler
4) Double click on the Applications Icon
5) Find the WineBottler Icon and double Click on it
6) It will pop up a warning. Click Open
7) It will ask if you want it to look for updates automatically. Suggestion is to allow it.
8) Quit Wine Bottler

This installs the program and associate it with windows executables.
All windows executable files will have the same Icon as the WineBottler

Step 2 (Install MediaCodeSpeedEdit):
1) Find the MediaCodeSpeedEdit folder in your Downloads
2) Double click the MediaCodeSpeedEdit.exe (which should have the same Icon as WineBottler)

You can choose to run the program directly or install it.
Based off your choice: (Suggested Install)
Choice Run:
3) Click Go
4) Skip to Step 3:

Choice Install:
3) Click on the Radio button that says: Convert to simple OS X Application bundle with Winebottler.
4) Click Go
5) Click the check box that says: Copy only. Select this, if file is the actual executable.
6) Click the Install button
7) In the Save As: text box give your app a name. (I gave mine the name of MCSE)
8) Right below Save As: is Where: drop down. Click it and select Applications
9) Click Save
10) Click OK
11) Quit WineBottler
12) Goto the Applications Folder and double click on your installed App (MCSE)

Step 3:
At this point MCSE should be Running
1) Read this topic to figure out how to use MCSE viewtopic.php?f=2&t=41228

Hi. I'm have the HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N and tried to flash this using wine but i cannot see the option to choose the drive to flash.

Is this because the MSCE does not support the HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N yet?

thanks in advance.

You cannot use MSCE to flash anything its a program that helps modify raw firmware files or ones packed in exe's. the updater will not work either since WINE does not support that type of drive access.

but since your drive is a LG Renesas based drive you can use my tool.

Hi devilsclaw thanks for the help.

However, I'm having some trouble with getting it to work on terminal.

Firstly, this is what I've done so far:

1) Verify that I have the right drive

Model: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N
Revision: AP12
Serial Number: KZ08ARN5622
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Low Power Polling: Yes
Power Off: Yes

2) Downloaded the Apple file from:
http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=category&id=1778

3) used Wine and MSCE to patch the .exe file to make it autoreset as per the defaults

4) rename the patched file to be GSA-S10N_AP12.exe

5) place the renamed file in the downloads folder and copy the flash (devilsclaw utility) to the Applications folder.

6) Open terminal and get the utility to rip the .exe file

However, I'm stuck with this:

Last login: Thu Oct 1 20:14:50 on console
james-2:~ teachers$ /Applications/flasher
james-2:~ teachers$ /Applications/flasher ./flasher -r GSA-S10N_AP12.exe
Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
cmd_ripexe: Starting firmware ripping process
cmd_ripexe: Failed firmware ripping process
james-2:~ teachers$ /Applications/flasher ./flasher -r GSA-S10N_AP12.exe
Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
cmd_ripexe: Starting firmware ripping process
cmd_ripexe: Failed firmware ripping process
james-2:~ teachers$

Please advise me if I am going about this correctly.

Also I should be downloading the Apple file or should i not have?

Sorry for the trouble and thanks in advance.

Thanks again for the fast reply.

I've created a folder for the flasher and placed the .exe file in it

This this is the log from terminal:

Last login: Thu Oct 1 20:14:50 on console
james-2:~ teachers$ /Applications/flasher -r GSA-S10N_AP12.exe Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
cmd_ripexe: Starting firmware ripping process
cmd_ripexe: Failed firmware ripping process
james-2:~ teachers$ /Applications/flasher\ 2/flasher -r GSA-S10N_AP12.exe
Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
cmd_ripexe: Starting firmware ripping process
cmd_ripexe: Failed firmware ripping process
james-2:~ teachers$

Edit* I've uploaded the file here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?rusa5xm1lbni5sp

thanks in advance.

From the looks of it I need to add more comprehensive messages back to the users with the flasher. you don't have the GSA-S10N.exe in the same directory as the flasher which in this case causes those errors since I was able to login to my Mac OS and rip the firmwares from the exe.

thanks for the heads up.

I tried it again. This time i got:

Last login: Thu Oct 1 20:14:50 on console
james-2:~ teachers$ /Applications/flasher -r /Applications/GSA-S10N_AP12.exe
Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
cmd_ripexe: Starting firmware ripping process
Firm location 0x00050000
firm_spliter: Unable to create MAIN_/Applications/GSA-S10N_AP12.exe.bin
firm_ripexe: Failed to split firmware
cmd_ripexe: Failed firmware ripping process
james-2:~ teachers$

I'm making progress but still stuck.

Thanks again for help rendered.

thats because there is a bug in my flasher which is why the flasher needs to be in the same directory as the exe it needs to rip so do

based off this /Applications/flasher -r /Applications/GSA-S10N_AP12.exe

it looks like flasher is in /Applications/ and GSA-S10N_AP12.exe is in /Applications/

so it should look like this

cd /Applications
./flasher -r GSA-S10N_AP12.exe

Awesome! It works!

I have :

james-2:Applications teachers$ cd /Applications
james-2:Applications teachers$ ./flasher -r GSA-S10N_AP12.exe
Devilsclaw's LG Renesas Drive Utility
cmd_ripexe: Starting firmware ripping process
Firm location 0x00050000
cmd_ripexe: Finished firmware ripping process
james-2:Applications teachers$

Edit found both. thanks!

Many many thanks.

PM sent and posting this so other people know it as well.

I would suggest testing the drive first to make sure its in the state you want it to be, because RPC2 auto reset normally only works when you have changes left if im not mistaken and it resets to the max you have available.

it means the dvd player will only allow one more change in disc (good news is the drive is not locked yet) so i'll try to see how i can try to get it to accept the new settings.

I'm just worried that i might be messing up the MSCE in WINE. I opened winebottler and opened MSCE but it never fully finishes? (I don't know)

Then I opened MSCE and loaded the firmware. Should i choose apply to this drive option? I think I'll try this now.

Then i save which gives me the new .exe

I then quit winebottler.

thanks,
James.

On a positive note, i think the error -70001 is an apple dvd problem.

I consider the flash to be successful cos i can get VLC to play dvds now and that is good enough.

A big thank you again devilsclaw.

My kids thank you too :D

Just a little OT but for others who are in the same position as me,

Remember to go to System Preferences and make the action of inserting a DVD to be "Do nothing"

Otherwise DVD player will auto run and prevent you from having a chance to run VLC.

A big thank you to all who have made this board a invaluable resource for all of us. :D =D>
