I am running Windows 2000 Professional, which doesn't suppost real dos mode, for example, you cannot restart your comp into dos mode. I have a bootdisk from >http://www.putergeek.com/downloads/< that is for WinME. It allows me to boot up my computer into dos, but only the floopy drive is accessible. My hard disk, matshita drive and plextor drive are not accessible. The file to create this bootdisk is called >winme_plain_boot_disk.exe<. I have one question: If use this bootdisk to boot my computer and try to apply the new firmware will it work properly because Windows 2000 doesn't support real dos mode yet that this disk allows me to boot up in dos. Will this bootdisk allow me to patch of Matshita DVD-ROM SR8585 from firmware 1W26 to 1X30 properly??? Thanx

If your drive is an IDE one, YES it will! The bootdisk and the flash utility alone are enough for IDE flashing. Now, if your drive is an SCSI one, you might need to load an SCSI driver (but not ASPI as I wrote prveiously), in order to access the SCSI adapter functions.

Well, here is what I would do. If you are running win2k you probably have pretty new computer and therfor pretty new motherboard with pretty new BIOS. Insert a Win98 CD(if you have it), go into BIOS and a primary boot choose CDROM. You will start with CD-ROM support and you will be able to see all your disks(are you using NTFS?). If you do not have a Win98 CD, go to you friend that has a Win98 and create a system diskette in the Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Boot Disk(something like this)->Create something. Go home. Boot with this diskette and flash you drive. Hope this helps.

Okay, I got all that. But do I have to have access to my DVD-ROM drive to flash it??? Can't I just flash it using the WinMe Plain BootDisk and the Flash Utility??? Main question: Do I have to have access to my DVD-ROM Drive to flash the firmware??? When I say access, I mean load the dos generic drivers so I can read cds.

If you have a WinMe bootdisk, it WILL loads the generic drivers automatically. Basically all you needed to do is to run the flash program at dos prompt.
