I notice that the unofficial GS23N SB00 01 firmware has recently been posted.
Has anyone had any luck using this firmware to flash the drive in a Macbook, and do you know if this firmware is RPC1?
I'm looking to patch it to RPC2 Autoreset (if it isn't RPC1); I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro.

This firmware is the original firmware, so you can patch it to RPC2 autoreset with MCSE. The LG flasher need run under Windows, so you need Bootcamp and a Windows installation.

Patched with MCSE and flashed under Windows 7 (Bootcamp), works nicely! Thanks for the help

I did it but the Firmware in System Profiler still says SB00...
How can I tell whether or not this worked? Ripping doesn't seem to be any faster...

Yeah, I think the Autoreset must work, because I changed it to Region 4 and then back to Region 2, but DVD Info X still shows 4 changes remaining (ie, it didn't decrement).
But ripping is still as slow as ever, unfortunately...

My Macbook Pro 13" is with GS23N SB00 firmware, I want to make it "region free" I am not so familiar with "flash" procedure, so I write down what I read (I believe I have exhausted search/browsing) as below: - Examine/confirm the drive and firmware version from "About This Mac" - Download GS23N SB00 original firmware from http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=view&id=5685- Download MCSE 1.2.0.5 from http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/- Set up Boot Camp and install Windows XP in partition - Execute MCSE under Windows and load original firmware, check "RPC2 Auto Reset" check-box, then save as "ABC.exe" under C:\ - In Windows environment, double click "ABC.exe" to let it execute (I am not sure this step because many referred a "flasher"(?? where to get it?), or should I execute ABC.exe under DOS command window?)- Shut down and re-start Please kindly indicate what I understand is correct. Thanks.

I executed ABC.exe under C:\ and wait a few mins till MCSE told me to reboot. I shut down Windows and restart I download Region X from http://xvi.rpc1.org/ and load the software in Mac OSX 10.6.2 My DVD is in Region 1 and change left is 4 (I have changed once) In Region X, Region sets to "not set" or "3" and Change Left is set to "5". I slide in a Region 3 DVD, the DVD Player pop out and still asked me Drive Region will be changed from 1 and change left is 4. I canceled. Repeated several times and still the same. How would I know the drive is "region free" now? If it is, what should I do? If not, should I try executing ABC.exe again? Please help, thanks a lot.

Hi The exe file isn't patched yet, is that correct? I am not a Windows person (I got Windows on my mac so I could flash that way, because Devilclaw's flasher seemed beyond my skills) - and when I clicked on the compressed exe file so I could expand it and patch it with MCSE, I got a message asking me if I wanted to go ahead and flash the drive.
I tried opening the compressed file with MCSE and it didn't recognise it.
I've gone ahead and patched it from OSX, operating MCSE through Wine, which seemed to work - but I'm wondering if there's a different way I should be going about it.
Thanks

It didn't work for me - I downloaded the linked file, and MCSE wouldn't recognise it....

I suspect this might just be a Windows/Mac thing (as in, I am not familiar with how things work in Windows!)
When I download the file on my Mac I end up with an .exe file, not a zipped file (even though the original file is zipped, and I haven't done anything on my Mac to extract the file, and my expander is not set to automatic). I'll just take that .exe file, bring it over into my Windows environment, open it there, repatch it to RPC2, and use the new .exe file to flash the drive.
If this seems wrong let me know? But otherwise I'll go ahead and keep my fingers crossed!
Cheers

The GS23N SB03 firmware in the database at http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=view&id=5722 is a .zip file, containing the .exe file that needs to be patched. The patched .exe file has to be started to flash the drive.

First post so apologies in advance if I break a rule.
Daughter's MacBook Pro with GS23N SB00 Firmware: she has now changed regions so many times it is region locked.
I have read the forum and I see the precise instructions above which I could follow.
Question: with a locked drive am I wasting my time. If so, what is the remedy?

Hey all,
With the help of people here, I successfully flashed my drive a 18 months ago.
Now the drive itself seems to be dying. I want to get Apple to replace it under the extended warranty.
I assume I need to replace the patched firmware with the original firmware or Apple will say I've voided the warranty.
Does anyone know if that's (a) correct and (b) possible? Can I use MCSE in a Windows environment to patch the firmware back to what it originally was?
Thanks!
