I'll give you both, first dumping:

Finished reading firmware dump from drive

converted firmware to flashable file MATSHITADVD-RAM_UJ892AS_1.00.dat
converted RPC1 firmware to flashable file MATSHITADVD-RAM_UJ892AS_1.00_RPC1.dat

Does the dump tool work ?

It appears so. However, I noticed something strange: I have four firmware files, a couple (patched and unpatched) I saved earlier, and a couple I have saved just now. All four appear to have different content. Admittedly I changed region code in between.

ala42 wrote:
Which Windows version and service pack level did you use for the PE disk ?

7 Ultimate 32bit

ala42 wrote:
Did you use the Microsoft IDE driver ?

This time I checked. At first it said "unknown" in the device manager, so I updated the driver. Afterwards it said cdrom.sys by MS, version 6.1.7600.16385.

ala42 wrote:
Is the SATA controller in IDE mode ?

I set it to IDE mode prior to my attempts of dumping and flashing the firmware.

ala42 wrote:
Are you using Linux ?

Normally yes.

So much for now, logging off for the night. :?

The matshita firmware files have an embedded zip file including a time stamp, which changes the encrypted files.

I'm getting the same error on Vista 32-bit as Kana-chan, but I believe my drive is on the supported list. I am running this from a command-prompt (with "Run as Administrator"), and am getting the same results in safe mode. It is an IDE drive on an IDE channel, so no AHCI issues for it.
Code:
Windows dumper for Matshita DVD drives V1.01 by ala42, based on ben11's dump_mat
shita

Enter the drive letter of the Matshita drive to backup the firmware: e
You have selected the source drive e

dump_matshita V 0.1
Appear to have a matshita device MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ-850S 1.20
dump 1
change_vendor_mode: rc 256  tries 1
dump 2
error during attempt to read memory from device \\.\e:

Press any key to continue . . .

EDIT: Figured out the problem. There was a disc in the drive; I removed it and it worked fine.

Does this tool dump from the UJ 120s yet?

I havent' seen any info around on these DVDRW drives (AT least i think it's a DVDRW, I know it's a BD-ROM at the very least)

:D Many thanks for this excellent work - I can finally watch DVDs on my laptop again. The instructions were great as I was very nervous not having flashed before - As a natural blonde I did waste some time searching the .dat files on my computer for one to drop onto the flash.bat but I finally realised that I needed to drop the one I had just created. Too simple.
I really need to update the 5 year old Vaio VGN-F and want to get a new F Series one which I assume will have the same problem with an installed MatSHITa drive so hopefully you can help

Post the complete output you get. Do you have administrator rights ? Was a disk in the drive ? Disable all virtual drives, AnyDVD, packet writing tools lile software like Sonic DLA or Nero INCD, RPC1 handling software.

Thank you for providing this fix. My drive is now region free but I am having problems with DVD Region Killer.

Running Windows 7 64 bit.

When I start the laptop, I get this error message:

"Elbycheck has detected that the filter driver regkill is not installed!
This driver is required for proper operation of software made by Elaborate Bytes.
You will need to reinstall the application, which requires the driver regkill."

Is there alternative software I could use?

Properly uninstall the slysoft tools along with their drivers, maybe in SAFE MODE.

Just a bit of an update.
I was curious if Toshiba maybe crippled the ability to read the DVD memory in their custom XP image's (they add plenty of other crap) So I took a disk image of my current installation then started a clean install afresh with AHCI off and a stock Windows XP disk with SP3 slipstreamed but no other changes. As soon as the install was over I tested both from safe mode and a normal login, .......and....... same result both time's other than the error code for both was RC -258 whereas previously I was getting RC -2.

No help to anyone I know but thought I'd post here to save others the time involved in trying. Guess Toshiba do something "special" to these drives.

Even though it hasn't worked for me I would still like to say a huge thanks to ala42, and everyone else, for all their work.

Richard

Oops - I just read that UJ-82x isn't supported yet.

Any ideas on what I might be able to do?

Thanks.

Currently you can just wait. I have not figured out yet how to build a flashable file from the dump file for the older drives.

I've heard that there is flashable firmware out there - it was made by Sony:

KMFOPD-01041900-US.exe

but the update doesn't work on an IBM.

Is it possible for someone to use the dump utility and get the file off of the new firmware (v1.51) so that we can use the winflash utility? Would that work?

Thanks!
MDHZ
