The Firmware Page

Quick question about this. I did search the forum and couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for.

- I currently have the HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N patched with SA17 auto reset firmware.

- I would like to run install the SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 to avoid annoying software update messages and get the benefit of no disc spin when waking from sleep

- I would then like install patched SA18 firmware to restore my ability to use auto reset.

I have 2 questions
1) Is it safe to run the SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 on top of patched SA17 firmware

2) Am I able to installed patched SA18 firmware on top of the SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 to restore my ability to use auto reset.

What do you think to archieve by doing this?

Either perform action listed under 1) or leave it as it is.

I want to achieve:
- Not having apple keep prompting for the SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 update
- Not having my DVD spin after waking from sleep which is what the above achieves
- Still get auto reset which is why I want to reflash with patched SA18

Maybe the above won't work.

can you not just update to a patched SA18, will the update not then detect, your drive is upto date?

The patch should not cause any problem for 1). You should also have no problem to flash a patched firmware for 2).

I believe the Mac update notifier works not by detecting your firmware but detecting which patches you've download and installed already.

Just reporting back.

1) Was able to update patched SA17 with the official SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 to stop my Mac keep promoting to update, and get the no CD spin on wake from sleep update.

2) Was able to path the SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 (SA18) to AutoReset SA18 in bootcamp so its still region free.

Took all morning though because my boot camp partition was corrupted

I did as described in this thread to update my GS21N-firmware:
1) downloaded the file found in the rpc1 archive (although MCSE mentioned it is firmware from an GS20N-driver)
2) applied MCSE to have an auto reset RPC2 version
3) updated my GS21N firmware
All fine, BUT:
1) how do I know if I have really updated? As I understood this thread there is no modified firmware identifier (for example "XA18" instead of "SA18"). My software("DVD Info X") checking für RPC1-capabilities still reports "RPC2 (locked)".
2) How does "AutoReset" works? Do I have to use for example "Region X" to reset the region code? Or will the drive unlock itself each time it is powered up?

see the FAQ for the difference between RPC2 Autoreset and RPC1 firmware. RegionX does not work with an autoreset firmware, only RPC1 Drives.
