I downloaded the firmware updater from the official LG web site...

I tried to update my DVD drive's firmware (originally A102) to A105 with the official flasher updater and it stoped in the middle with the next error message...

"Updating was failed. Please repeat that. (Error data = 70 00 04 00 00 00 00 10 09 00 00 00 8F 81 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00"

Noe my drive is dead... :( and it shows "COR5" firmware version in the updater (after runs the firmware updater and happen the error).

What can i do to recover this??

there's no disc inside the drive... the cable is perfect...mother goes fine...but i don't know what to do ...i'm desperate!!

Thanks in advance! Greetings! .... i'm new and sorry for my english please...

first post your discinfo.
second give us the link where you downloaded your updater at.
third if your drive is showing COR5 then its not fully dead its in recovery mode.

forth you might need to send us a picture of your drives label the top side that shows the original firmware and version.

oh on a side note have you tried to turn off your computer completely as in no power to see if the drive recovers on its own.

well the good news is that you did not flash it with the incorrect firmware, the other good news is that the update you used does not have the core firmware in it so its not possible to fully kill your drive with it, except if something is wrong with your drive.

you can attempt to flash it with my tool
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46137

extract the firmware from the update you downloaded with my tool and then flash it. there are instructions in the link i posted.

remember to always reboot after flashing a drive.

my program does not support flashing directly from the exe you have to rip the firmware from it first.

flasher -r GSA4163A105.exe

it will generate

MAIN_GSA4163A105.exe.hex

or something similar. that is what you need to pass to the -f param.

I might add in the ability to flash directly from exe. my question is how did it even get that far since its supposed to check if its a valid firmware.

Connect your drive to another computer and flash with the official updater package!!

Your controller seems to have a problem with it, or the datacable is defective...

yeah it seems my tool is not even able to do a basic query to your drive which does not make much sense.

Ok sorry for the large image file...

I've tested the drive into my old pentium computer and the official flasher shows the same error code...i've got 3 ide cables... but is the same... the cable is perfect because my other drives works perfectly!!!...

I downloaded official updater of different versions but ever for my model GSA-4163B ...

The only answer is that my drive is OEM i think but i guess that could be a solution anyway...

this is the text from official LG's web page:

※ INSTRUCIONS

GSA-4163B Version A105 Firmware Update
To update the firmware of the GSA-4163B please refer to the following instructions:

Note: Not following the subsequent update instructions explicitly will result in
permanent damage to your drive, for which LG will not be responsible.

This firmware update is for drives with original firmware versions below A104.
The drives must be original LG branded drives with the DVD Writer
model number GSA-4163B(no OEM units).

If you have an OEM unit, branded with another manufacturers name,
please contact that manufacturer for support and firmware updates.

This firmware update is for use only on PC’s with Windows XP, Windows 2000,
Windows Millennium Edition (ME), or Windows 98SE.

Please check the jumper setting at the rear of the drive.
I would set it to master, CS is definetely a bad choice (except for Dell computers) and slave is sometimes necessary to allow proper flashing.
In question, both try as master and slave jumpered........

If you would dump the drives core and main firmware and post it here. also the other thing to note is that you CANNOT have a cd in the drive while flashing the drive, since they use the cache for the temporary memory storage before making the flash permanent.

Your drive is not dead.
Do you know the meaning of "dead"?

Follow the suggestions made in the other posts.

The latest Firmware flashed is 4163an16.exe.
The drive GSA-4163B works, since about 3 years, correctly.

Thanks for the answer. I have flashed 'an16' version and seems to work.

But my main question is not anwered, how to flash explicitely the 'core' part of the firmware.

Regards kumue
