Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I also did some searching but didn't find anything like this (unless I missed it).
Not too long ago I tried to flash my Region 1 drive with the appropriate firmware so that it would get rid of the region locking. After doing so, it really messed up almost all playback of any of my DVD's. Basically, when putting in a DVD and playing it in Windows Media Player, the video would either not play, be completely messed up (garbage all over the screen or would show the first frame that came up and nothing else), speed up and sound terrible, or complain that my DVD was not the appropriate region (even though it was a region 1 DVD to begin with, which is all I have). I know that I am suppose to also remove Region locking from the OS and WMP, but why would it now complain that my region 1 disc can't play on my region 1 drive? Since I haven't touched the region locking on the OS/WMP, it should still let me play Region 1 DVD's... but it wouldn't/mess up.
Oddly enough, the DVD's video and sound would play perfectly in VLC media player. Unfortunately, I couldn't hit next, skip, or return to menu without it returning to the beginning of the disc (as if I had just popped in the DVD). Some DVD's did work fine though (like Airplane!), but others (like Over The Hedge or Surf's Up DVD) wouldn't work properly.
I made sure that I installed the appropriate Firmware, but thankfully I was able to reflash to my original Firmware (and now everything is working as it did before).
Anyone know what might have caused this? When I flashed my DVD drive with the RPC-1, DVD's wouldn't play in WMP and wouldn't play properly in VLC. After I restored the original Firmware, everything was back to normal (and I could play DVD's to my hearts content).
