Wow, great news for travelers with newer macs. The only thing I would like to calify is... ala42 wrote: Check RPC state:Make sure the RPC region on your drive is already set. You can check that with DVD Info X Is there a specific reason why it would be required to have your superdrive set to a region before flashing it to a RPC 1 firmware ? Or can an RPC 1 firmware also be applied to an out-of-the-box Mac where no region has yet been set, i.e. Code: RPC-2 (region locked) State is NOT SET 4 vendor resets left 5 region changes left No region set Thank you.

I am not sure about this and quoted what was posted with early Matshita DVD-ROM RPC1 patches. If you dare just try it and report back. You can flash back to the original firmware in case of trouble.

Ok, I looked around and came across macbook-fr.com who explicitly state that... Code: Before upgrading your optical drive, be sure you have selected a zone by reading a DVD with the Apple DVD Player (ie). If this modification is not made, your drive simply won’t work after the operation. and Code: And we’d like you to remember few points before upgrading your drives, you MUST choose a zone. Unless your optical drive won’t read DVDs anymore !!! and as you already mentioned, the README to the Aug. 2007 RPC1 firmware updates (for example UJ-857D KBVB) also states that... Code: Be sure your drive has been assigned a region before upgrading. If you are not sure if a region has been set you can use a utility like "DVDInfo X" to check. If DVDInfo X displays "No region set", then play some movie(s) until it displays "Region 1" (or any other region number). so there might be a reason to it. I'll dig around a bit further.

From day 1 when I purchased my MBPro _ Leopard I never did set my Region or Played any Region Encoded Dvd's in my drive, I waited patiently for an RPC1 to become available and then flashed my Matshita UJ_868, so if you have never set your region, you can go ahead and flash to RPC1, hope this all makes sense. Cheers pathfinderti

Greetings,
I followed your instructions and here is what appears in the terminal window :
simple_flash V 1.0 compiled at Jan 10 2010 21:30:59 flash data appears to be too short
logout
[Opération terminée]
Here is the info regarding my DVD : MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 :
Révision du programme interne : KA19 Interconnexion : ATAPI Gestion de la gravure : Oui (lecteur livré par Apple) Cache : 2048 Ko Lecture de DVD : Oui CD gravables : -R, -RW DVD gravables : -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW Stratégies d’écriture : CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO Données : Insérez un support et actualisez l’affichage pour connaître les vitesses de gravure disponibles.
I have been looking for a solution to free my macbook pro from any dvd encoding and I am really hoping that you will be able to help me. Please note that I am not an expert when it comes to computers...
Thanks for your help.

You dropped the wrong file onto the flasher app. You get the "flash data appears to be too short" message if the firmware file is very small. Did you really use the firmware .dat file, length about 800KB ?

Hi - I'm a total newbie to this so please forgive any upcoming stupidity... I'm trying to make a Matshita UJ-846 (FB2U) region-free on a G5 iMac running 10.6.2. Here are my specs: From System Profiler: Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac4,1 Processor Name: Intel Core Duo Processor Speed: 2 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 2 MB Memory: 2 GB Bus Speed: 667 MHz Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08 SMC Version (system): 1.1f5 Serial Number (system): --- Hardware UUID: --- MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846: Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846 Revision: FB2U Serial Number: Detachable Drive: No Protocol: ATAPI Unit Number: 0 Socket Type: Internal Low Power Polling: Yes Power Off: No And from DVD INFO X: Vendor: MATSHITA Model: DVD-R UJ-846 Firmware: FB2U RPC-2 (region locked) State is SET 4 vendor resets left 2 region changes left Region 4 I downloaded what seems to be the correct software to flash this drive from this thread: viewtopic.php?t=43082The file was 'UJ-846-FB2U.zip' Unfortunately, when I run the updater it says it is not compatible with my version of OS X (10.6.2), which is Snow Leopard. Is there an updated version or a different method by which I can flash this drive under Snow Leopard? Thanks for any advice...

Is there an updated version or a different method by which I can flash this drive under Snow Leopard? Newer MacOS versions do not like the old packages. I will probably enhance the flasher to extract the firmware from the packages later to avoid the workaround of temporary patching a system file. In the mean time, read your PM.

Hi, I have the UJ-867 with HA13 firmware and get an un-matching error with the new file. I think this may be the same issue reported earlier. The selected file from your site reads UJ867A while mine reads UJ-867. It says "selected device does not match firmware". Any solutions or suggestions?
Thanks for the assistance Rob

rob221: You'll have to wait for ala42 to release a HA13 firmware file that is RPC1. I've submitted such a file to him, so it's wait and see.
