As technology and features change rapidly, it is hard to stay current on "who's winning".
I am planning to build a new workstation and looking for opinions about who makes the best drives.
SATA or EIDE, speed not important.
Must be reliable, quiet, and solidly build (bulletproof would be good).
Plextor used to be the best, is that still true?
All opinions welcome.

Thanks,
Doug

Plextor only rebadged within the last few years.
Optiarc and Pioneer (up to 117/217) made great burners.

Wow, I am behind the times regarding media drives. My focus has been on motherboards and CPUs.
I had a Pioneer in a previous build and it was ok, not the best. The most compatible drive I have right now
is a Memorex writer. Paired with a Sony writer, it works well but, neither are as solid as I would like.
I'm not familiar with Optiarc.

memorex 8O , would leave them well alone, the choice is now endless, most manufacturers do some solid reliable drives, liteon, samsung, and as chef has posted Pioneer, best bet is to read some reviews, and decide what you want out of your drive.

I too am not a fan of memorex but, I have to admit it writes to "junk" media better than some, Besides, it was free. I am not that impressed with the Sony either.
I had a Samsung SH-S202 for a long time (I think I still have it somewhere)and found it very reliable.
I'll look at some of the reviews on other sites.
