I have several Compaq 1800 Presario laptops that I am using. My specific question is probably very basic to you. But I need a little help.
I have put a Toshiba SD-R2002 cd-rw-dvd in one of them. It is region locked on region 2 when I try and play a dvd here in America. It shows no changes left. Window Media Player, Intervideo DVD and Nero all tell me that there are 0 left on the region counter. I want to resest it and flash the firmware. If I break trash this drive, that's ok. I'm learning and it's worth a shot. I have an extra plain DVD drive to put in it I fry this one. I am running XP.
I did a search and didn't find any specifics on this problem. Maybe I missed it. If you will please walk me through the steps on this. (Which pins do I put 750 volts across? Just KIDDING about that.) I think I can follow DOS instructions but I don't know what any of it really means.
Thanks so much.

No changes left doesnt sound good, you may want to use AnyDVD.

Thanks for helping. Sorry to take awhile getting back on this. I had to leave home for work and get some time to poke around with the laptop. I’m not sure what “diskinfo” you are looking for. I didn’t want to trouble you if it was something I could figure out myself. I’ve been looking on my computer. Is this what you mean?
It is from “System Information/System Summary/Components/Multimedia/CD-ROM’”.
Drive D:
Description CD-ROM Drive
Media Loaded No
Media Type CD-ROM
Name TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2002
Manufacturer (Standard CD-ROM drives)
Status OK
Transfer Rate Not Available
SCSI Target ID 0
PNP Device ID IDE\CDROMTOSHIBA_DVD-ROM_SD-R2002________________1Q24____\5&35C6CA11&0&0.0.0
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys (5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158), 48.38 KB (49,536 bytes), 3/31/2003 8:00 AM)

I understand the “firmware” should show up someplace, but I haven’t been able to locate that.
There is really nothing under “My Computer/ DVD/CD-RW Drive (D:)/ Properties/Hardware/Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2002/ Properties” that looks like it would help on any of the tabs..
Appreciate your information. This is a real challenge.

Oh, I didn't see "chef" had posted when I posted last.
So "diskinfo" is a software program? OK I'll research that.
Any I understand that AnyDVD may be the way to go. Don't want to eat up anyone elses' time if this is a real pickle. Just thought it would be nice to have the drive set up with the best firmware.

Yes, discinfo is a superb litle tool.
You can find it by clicking on link 2 in my signature. ;)
Seems that your drive has fw 1Q24...

Thanks for your help, chef. I wasn't able to get diskinfo installed from work yesterday since I have to use the company's computer and downloading it to a stick and trying to get it on this laptop didn't work. (Either my bad or more likely some type of block with the company server). But it installed easy at home by unzipping it. I see you already got the firmware info from what I put up yesterday. I wouldn't have known that was it.
I understand if this site is for people that do this stuff for a living and this is more trouble than it is worth to anyone. I just planned on having this Compaq equipment for a while. I have stocked up on them. I use two on my job and I have a couple at home to use. So if I could get this drive set up to swapp to another computer in the future without having to do software that would be good for me.

There is XQ35B in the firmware base, but I don't know if this is the correct firmware for your drive...
If 1Q35 is a valid update for your drive, then Xq35 should be the right one.

Maybe Backfire can give us a hint...

THANKS so much for your help. =D>
This was all a first for me. Watching the "dos" on screen do it's thing was a trip.
I just created a "bootable disk" and followed the "read me" instructions. The drive works and is not region locked according to diskinfo. It plays a US dvd. The best part is the feeling of accomplishment! It's not just about "saving" a drive which is probably only worth a few bucks. It's the principle of the thing.
Now let me go "donate" if I can figure that out.
