For Puma,
I've downloaded DVRFlash v2.6.0, and the S0415430.104 kernal and S0415431.109 firmware (Pioneer's latest) to turn my new 216D into a 216L. I just want to add the DVD-RAM writing capability and nothing tricky. The MCSE capabilities look intimidating, and since I don't really want to edit speeds (too much a novice for that), can I ignore it altogether? It seems that Sprocket was trying to gain some features that I wouldn't appreciate - I just want to keep it simple. :P

Then you dont need L!
You only need 216 firmware.

if you don't want RPC1, riplock removal, then you can just use what you posted, to gain DVDRam Burning

there is no kernel file for the 216, just the 216L version

It seems that my reflashed 216D drive is now a 216 drive stuck in the kernel mode. I used the latest 216 file, S0015001.109 from Pioneer, ran it through MCSE, used the command DVRFlash -ff e: S0015001_speedflashed.109, and got the same error code as Sprocket above (Could not send the Flash command....). My MCSE is version 1.1.0.21. On DISK Info, the View - Capabilities Info is greyed out (probably because it's not in normal mode.) Executing DVRFlash e: gives:
Description : PIONEER DVD_RW DVR-216
Firmware Rev: 0000
Firmware Date: 80/01/23
Manufacturer : PIONEER
! Drive is in kernel mode !
I've rebooted several tmes (including power cycle). Any suggestions? I feel success is close at hand, but....! :?

the first post in this thread is what you should read, what you have done is wrong, you have only supplied the firmware, which will put the drive into kernel mode, and it will stay there, on the first post down the file for the S16J, and use DVRFlash and use the command line with the kernel file, then followed by your firmware file

DVRFlash -ff e: S0415430.104 S0415431.109

remember to use MCSE to apply any patches, change the last name if you save it as speedpatched, the firmware you will need to download the 1.09 S16J for the latest from pioneer

http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/device/file ... 09EUJ2.EXE

extract the firmware using winrar etc

Okay, I now have the S16J kernel and normal file, and will try again tonight after work. I got confused by a post saying I only needed the 216 firmware, thinking "normal" and not a kernel file also, so I only downloaded a 216 v.1.09 normal file. I don't need label flash, but will the S16J files give me the "L" capability? Thanks for your patience!

if your drive was a 216 originally, then just the firmware would be fine, but whenever you crossflash, you need a kernel file as well, if you don't, then the drive goes into kernel mode, which is basically a safemode, there isn't a plain 216 kernel to use, that is why to recover the drive, we will use the S16J, this will give you labelflash yes, and the drive id 216L, any problem post back

Woo-hoo! I can't believe how easy that was, once I had the correct files. I'm now the proud owner of a 216L, with all the rights and priveleges thereof - speedflashed, region free, and DVD-RAM burning. I may just have to go out now and buy some media so I can try the Lable Flash feature! I've sure learned a lot here, and I finally got a Pioneer representative to confirm that the 216D was DVD-RAM write-incapable, despite what their internal service manual said. Thanks for being so patient with a noobie and making me look good! \:D/

and? to use use MCSE, you need a firmware released from pioneer, which is highly unlikely it will be soon

err.. no i'ved checked with nero infotool, the labelflash box is not checked. can u recommend another firmware that i can try to crossflash so that i can have labelflash enabled? by the way my drive is detected as a DVR-216 even though when i updated my firmware, i used the firmware for S16. It does not allow me to use the firmware for S16J. Thxs.

see my first post, the S16FXB is not a labelflash model, to gain labelflash croosflash it to the S16J, you can replace the firmware file with the latest and use the kernel included

Hi,

I've just bought a Pioneer 216 drive, and I wanted to crossflash it to 216L, tu burn dvd ram and use labellflash...
I've dowloaded the "DVRS16J_106" pack, and i'm trying flashing my drive using dvrflash, but each time i got the message "can't open firmware file "S041530.104" "....

I'm using an ich9R based motherboard, with the command line "dvrflash.exe -ff J: S0411530.104 S0415531.106" and XP
After the question "do you understand and agree...", I type Y and got the error message
Using dvrflash -v, the drive is well identified as J:

As other people succeded in crossflashing 216D to 216L, is there anything wrong with me ? Or with the kernel file ? My drive is v108, could it be the problem (using the 106 firmware) ?

I got different files (?), but finally I retried using the pcix sata chipset integrated on my motherboard (instead of ICH9), and it works.... Yeah, thank you very much, now I own a Pioneer 216L burner =D>

Edit : no, I got the good files, it was just a typo error :D
