Hi - It would normally be a boyfriends role to flash his girlfriends drive as she wouldn't normally know how, I'm confident I don't need a man to do it, girlpower ! a man would be nice though but that's beside the point.

I read the request rules, sorry if I've missed something already offered here, I can find a Firmware for FAV1 (2006) but it required a much older version of OSX to work and I haven't used Panther or Tiger for over 2 years.
If anybody is able to offer a firmware for FAV1, for a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J many thanks in advance.

My MBP is now currently locked in Region 4 (AUS/NZ) I recently watched a Hal Hartley film called "Trust" with some girlfriends during a crazy pajama party and after one two many glasses of red we accidently locked the region (it had 1 change to go) I had been using VLC up until this point bypassing DVDPlayer, now sadly VLC won't even work the way it did before the fateful "Lock".
I could cry, but Girlpower prevails and I'm holding back the tears for now, if you can help please do, I need RPC-1 for 10.5.6 Leopard, UJ-85J FAV1. =P~

thanks all.
Jenny

No more region changes allowed mean that the drive is locked forever.

You're Wrong !

Sure it was locked - as in forever (verified by DVD Info X), but it aint anymore, I'm doing Regions 1-6 no problemo !

I finally managed to install the firmware thanks to a tip from someone in an Apple Support forum I changed the "SystemVersion.plist" OS version (located in MacintoshHD>CoreServices) from 10.5.6 to 10.4.9 so the 2006 Firmware worked in 2009, thanks to Ben11 for making this patch.

So Chef nothing is permanent and if anyone ever has a drive that they think is locked forever you can be the first to tell them "it aint so" then you can tell them a girl told you that.

So if you have a MacBook Pro 17" with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J and Firmware FAV1 locked or unlocked grab the firmware follow the tips above and rocknroll baby !

Love to all the cynics

You are still wrong, I'm afraid.

If you could install an rpc1 firmware and after that changing regions again then you have provided wrong information in your first post.

ok, lets not get into an arguement, you have flashed an RPC1 firmware from Ben11 to the drive on your mac, by changing the .plist file, which many of our members have done, and now you have an RPC1 drive, and able to change regions using DVDRegionX, correct?

come of it, who's insulting who? i posted in a friendly manner, its you who has responded with this rubbish, you wouldn't have no firmware if we didn't host it, and certain RPC1 crew didn't point ben11 in the right direction.

Maybe we should remove all these RPC1 firmwares full stop

To repost what already is: the initial post states that the drive were locked and zero changes left.
That means, even any other firmware flashed cannot make this drive unlocked. The only way to unlock it is to use a vendor reset - and AFAIK even ben11 could not do that magic.

There is no point to insult anyone here.

jtappr you are totally right.

i had NO changes left on my UJ-85J which I'm assuming means it was locked.

(of course i could be wrong, wouldn't want Puma to take all the firmwares down)

So anyway, I downloaded the patch, installed (after changing SystemVersion.plist) and now I can watch any region with a little help from Region X1.6.

Hope this gives a little hope to all the UJ-85J FAV1 owners out there.

Cheers,
Nayth

Please post some pictures/info from your drive here so this can be cleared up.
Thanks

Hello,
I'have tried the plist trick change on snow leopard and flash the UJ-85J FAV1 Firmware from Ben11.
I'm sure that there were no changes left to the region :
Quote:
DVD Info X v1.0.2, by xvi (xvi@rpc1.org)

WARNING --- DVD Info X will only list DVD drives that have some WRITE
capabilities, like combos, DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc...
DVD-ROM-only drives will NOT be listed.
WARNING --- You also must eject any inserted medium to list the drive.

Vendor: MATSHITA
Model: DVD-R UJ-85J
Firmware: FAV1
RPC-2 (region locked)
State is PERMANENT
4 vendor resets left
0 region change left
Region 1

the first time I try to flash the updater quits.
I retry and it works : the region can be reset with RegionX now.

That's all I can say.
Only facts.

Good point!

There can be always exceptions...remember the long-going matshita issue........

hey hows it going people, i to accidentally locked my dvd drive had no way of playing all my old DVDs from the uk.

my dvd drive was a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J FMOS, however after a little tinkering i have managed to successfully unlock it again. i used the patched firmware from this forum ( the update FMOS to region free.app ) and i drag it into a DVD flashing app that i also got from this forum but i also had to change the file in coreservices for this to work. Im not saying that was the answer , it may be accidental that the last time i did something i wasnt doing before but after 3 days trying i changed the file and flashed my now region free drive :)

hope this info is usefull to you guys, take it easy!!

im currently running snow leopard 10.6.7
