Hi, i need a firmware patch (or anything) for my Sony Bluerayplayer "BDP-S1". It´s an US Model with original Frimware Ver. 4.20. It has a Pioneer BDV-101aso drive unit built in.
The Problem is, that I can´t watch german DVDs! with this american firmware. I already tried installing the european firmware 4.30, but it gaves me the wrt error 6 (means I shall use the firmware made for my model). At US Version 4.1 the DVD ran on, but stopped and told me "prohibited by the disc" or "invalid region code", with the 4.20 now, the dvd doesn´t already starts. Blueray is not my Problem - they all run! Just the german (european) DVDs! don´t run. What can I do? I read it´s possible to put this drive into a personal computer - so could I crack it on that way possibly? Thanks a lot, Peter

i know - that´s why i´m here. maybe someone wrote one or knows one that wrote one or maybe there´s another trick... today i took the drive unit out and put in into my pc - i took the regional code at "two". now i´ve got 3 more chances to change the dvd regional code, and my german dvds ran. then i took it back into my bdp-s1 - BUT: it didn´t work! still the regional code problem with my dvds. regards, peter

@ onkelpeter83, Don’t know much about your Sony BDP-S1 Blu-Ray player and quite frankly don’t care to spend ant time with any Sony product – in my book any product with the Sony name stamped on is vastly overpriced and an inferior product. If you can take the Sony BDP-S1 “Drive” and place it in your Computer then you can use the SlySoft ‘AnyDVD HD’ software program ( http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html) to view any region DVDs without permanently changing the region code of the Sony BDP-S1 “Drive” while the Sony BDP-S1 “Drive” is installed in your computer. Also knowing how Sony operates and designs their products I suspect that the Sony BDP-S1 Blu-Ray player “Drive” is actually one of their IDE Computer “Drives” that they have just stuck in a standalone desktop player “Case”. I believe if you are “creative” you will be able to determine exactly what IDE Computer “Drive” model your Sony BDP-S1 Blu-Ray player actually is and perhaps a RPC-1 Region Free Firmware exists for that particular IDE Computer “Drive” model. Regards, Coaster

Hi, all yours answers i already posted in my question... so thanks, but i´m not too far through that. i know everything about the drive, and how to watch discs codefree at my pc with it, but when i put the drive back to my player, it´s the US region code again. so i need a tool or someones help to fix the RC1 into the bsp-s1 itself. Is my question understandable? Sorry - I´m german. regards, peter

Either you have patched the drive with an RPC-1 firmware to make it work "regioncode free" in the standalone or you have some kind of code entewred by using the remote control. Such codes normally aren't available for Sony products...

@ puma: sorry, i meant pioneer, not panasonic (how i wrote in my first post). and its a standard ide. i can change the dvd regional code for it in my pc. it shows after changing that i have only 4 more trys (than 5 before), but when i put it back into the player case, it´s the american regional code again (without taking one of the change trys). very strange in my opinion. i don´t want to hack the player so bad, just changing to a german regional code was enough for me.
@ chef: i read your post carefully, but either i don´t understand u or you don´t understand my question - i don´t know, but i don´t see my question answered... there´s a solution for sure, if u don´t have one, i wonder why you post (that there´s not one, i can read on the sony homepage!)
regards, peter

it´s for sure sony chipped, but i don´t know how to bypass (if it´s possible indeed). and it´s getting stranger: i tried both - dvd and bluray. bluray seems to be regionfree!!! i didn´t try american blurays, but the german ones run at least. i got the player from usa and not one german dvd runs, but blurays do - thats why i think its regionfree. so my problem is the dvd feature. i want to run german coded dvds. they run on but after one second the player software shows "incompatible region number" - american music dvds run. and as i said above, do i put the device into my pc, every german dvd runs. so i gotta tell the sony software into the player that i wanna change the regional code. Sony sais, this won´t work, but in holland a guy cracks the players for a lot of money - this means there has to be a way that works. he sais it´s hardware modding, but i don´t believe that. i think i have to change the firmware. but dunno how. i already load the original source codes, but dunno what to do with it, or if it brings me further. in addition i tried to install the german firmware, but the player told an error when i tried. i also tried to put the (maybe original) pioneer firmware on it - same error. by the way, here´s a link to the newest firmware (you once asked for): http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=BDPS1i choosed the xp one. i´m at my wit´s end, please someone help... regards, peter

sorry, but "it´s so" isn´t satisfying. the fact that the drive is software changeable and that the different original firmwares i installed different errors made concerning the reg code, sais that it´s a software problem...

i believe in it, cauz i know it exists. a mate working for sony told me about a firmware that can do it, but sony holds it over - reasonable... but in fact that shows, that it´s possible to change everything at the player excepting the physical hardware.

blu-ray region and DVD region are two different things, if you patch it to RPC1, then you still have the blueray function to deal with.
I have had many sony items, and the norm, is to have an aftermarket chip fitted for this, the bluray function, requires the whole machine is stripped down so another processor and a firmware chip can be fitted, it then acts like 2 regions in one machine, ie A+B,then before entering the disc, you would press the region/letter to get it to play. then 1 or 2 for dvd's, i'm sure someone told me, you get only regions 1+2 and 0 for this
