I have spent a few hours on this Forum trying to troubleshoot to no avail! I have a Compaq Presario 2500 Pentium 4 1.6GHz with Windows XP Pro SP2. I bought this Laptop from a friend and I am fixing it and trying to get it to run smoothly. The DVD/CD drive will read DVD's but will not read CD's. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drive but no success. Any help?

tried cleaning it? Yes
do you recieve any error messages, No Error Messages
disc just spins? It sounds like it is spinning. Green light flashes. DVD's work fine.
or no response at all? No Response after spinning. In My Computer there is nothing when the CD/DVD drive is clicked on. With DVD's the name of the DVD is listed in My Computer.
Thanks.

About 6 years old. I paid $100 for the laptop and it works great except this issue. I am starting to think it is hardware also. Thanks for your help.

The optical lens inside the GCC-4241N DVD drive could be either dirty or worn out (especially if you make the drive read dirty or scratched CDs/DVDs). Try out the DVD lens cleaning tips from this forum page: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f89/how-safely ... ns-144525/If the cleaning tips there don't help improve the situation, then the DVD drive may eventually have to be replaced. I'm currently using my cousin's HP/Compaq Presario 2108US laptop with WinXP SP3 Pro that also has the HL-DT-ST GCC-4241N DVD drive with firmware revision OC29. The DVD drive there can still read almost any type of CDs/DVDs except HD DVD discs and CD+G discs.

Hi, I am trying to install a new HDD in a mate's Compaq NX9010 with a HL-DT-ST GCC-4241N DVD drive Firmware OC29. I could not get any OS CD's to boot but it tried a Windows 7 DVD OK. Then replaced old HDD and XP will run any DVD but not a single CD. I suppose it is time for him to buty a new drive as it is old kit now and the firmware was the last available but could there be any other solution please
