Hi,

I've inherited an ancient PC running Windows Millenium that has a Toshiba SD-R1102 DVD-ROM, current firmware version 1012. It's going to be converted to a linux box, but the drive's so old/knackered that it won't read the install DVD. Googling has led me to believe that the DVD format may be too modern for the drive and that a firmware upgrade will solve the problem. Is this correct?

If someone can put me straight on this, and preferably give a link to a newer firmware download, I'd be really gateful.

Cheers

Steve

Exactly. If there is a problem with a pressed DVD then either the drive needs cleaning or its knackered...

It's just this install DVD that can't be read. Movies reads & runs without error.
The install DVD reads fine in a drive on a newer XP box, so there no problem with the disc. Like you say, most probably an old/knackered DVD-ROM drive.

Thanks for the help

sounds as if there is content or its a type of DVD, that the machine is finding hard to read

Maybe you could create a copy of the disk and try with the copy then. ;)
