I brought this subject up a while ago with NILS and think this is worth clarifying to remove confusion, particularly when people are trying to figure out when they need to flash the Kernel on a Pioneer drive.
The use of OEM is a loose term used wrongly here and should be termed REBADGED. This is what is meant when instructed to use a Kernel to go from an 'OEM' drive to a 'PIONEER' drive.
The true meaning of OEM is a device by the SAME manufacture in a NON-RETAIL box designed to be installed by system builders. EG. PIONEER DVDR 112 vs the retail version A112. Both have the 'Pioneer' name on the front and both look the same (sometimes a cosmetic difference might exist).
The REBADGED device will show a completely different manufacturer name but the guts will be a PIONEER.
It would be good for some FAQ or sticky to clarify this as I know people get confused by the misuse of the terms when applied to firmware issues.
Hope this helps

I always underline that the offered OEM drives are wrongly advertised, because OEM refers to drives from system builders included in complete systems. BULK is the correct term for that drives offered online. Few offered are retail, which would be the same as bulk but with extras like cable, complete manual, installation parts and sometimes also a different look (rem XL drives). So, the confusion is created by the dealers, mostly.
DVRFlash has the important info feature -verbose which gives the specific info about what drive you have.
BTW, this is wrong: "Both have the 'Pioneer' name on the front and both look the same (sometimes a cosmetic difference might exist)." There is no name sign on non retail drives.

However, I do accept that a rebadged product does fit under the OEM umbrella so I won't argue the point. I was just pointing out a need for clarification for those who may be confused. If you say no one is confused then no problem.

I stand corrected, you are right although the 'Pioneer Corporation' does exist on the label which may or may not do on a rebadged model. As I've never had a rebadged one I can't say.

Is it possible to back a firmware up from a DVR-115 with this?
The reason i ask is the DVR-115 we are using have the firmware modded to the drive extends the drawn out more than the factory firmware.... I would like to buy genric drives and use the firmware from one of the drives we have already.

@ tomolewis,
Exactly where are you obtaining this information that a “Modified Firmware” somehow pushes the draw “more open” than an Official Pioneer DVR-115 Firmware?
Perchance have you actually looked at the innards of a dissembled DVR-115 Drive and noted how the cam lever assembly arm actually engages the draw slide assembly mechanism to open the draw of a DVR-115 Drive?
Over the years I have dissembled and repaired numerous Pioneer DVR Drives with various “sticky” draw problems and am intimately aware of exactly how the Pioneer DVR cam lever assembly arm and draw slide assembly mechanism interact with each other to push open the draw on a Pioneer DVR-115 Drive.
Unless you have some type of specially manufactured DVR-115 Drive (which I doubt) with a different cam lever assembly arm and draw slide assembly mechanism there is no way that a “Modified Firmware” is somehow going to push “more open” the draw any farther open. The way the cam lever assembly arm engages the draw slide assembly mechanism it is physically impossible to Push the draw “more open”.
As Forum Member ala42 suggests I believe to obtain slightly more draw travel that the draw travel limit micro switch is adjusted slightly to obtain more draw travel and this draw travel limit micro switch adjustment has nothing to do with “Modified Firmware”.
Regards, Coaster

-Tom least you know now, and maybe can inform these people, that they are talking nonsense, firmware can do many things, but not that many, lol
