For those of us that are still on Nero 7, they have just released an unexpected update:

7.11.6.0
Release Date: 15th April 2008

MD5: 1bebc404685d1b669107be57e763d548

BUT, be advised that it is a massive download because for some inexplicable reason, they have included ALL language support in this file?????

I could see no way of, in my case, just downloading the English version!!!

Absolutely no idea (as is usual with Nero of course) what they have changed but, as we all know, the rule of thumb is (generally) to keep yourself updated (protection against new virus attacks and so on).

Ensure, that at the very least, you have a Restore point (preferably a full system backup) before you install this.

Good luck all :)

tjs.

Being on Broadband, I was of course mug (daft, mad, silly) enough to download this file and, as I thought, there were umpteen language installation options (including of course, English).

I have to say that although I always take the 'Custom' install and reject about 90% of their Bloatware, I do quite like the basic 'Nero Burning ROM' stuff.

To this end, 7.11.6.0 SEEMS stable sofar :)

Don't forget you don't have to download that huge file to update your previous installation.....

Nero ProfuctSetup will do the job for you, and it only downloads the applications which have updates available - which in my case amounted to about 140 megabytes, and the whole thing completed in about 20 minutes, which isn't bad by Nero standards!

Somehow I always expect ProductSetup to crash horribly, but it seems to work fine, even though it does creak along ominously slowly.....

Hi Rog,

You are quite right...the reason I missed that one is, like I've said above, I reject most of Nero's offerings and do not install 'Nero StartSmart' where of course this option can be found (I gather).

Thanks for pointing out this solution :)

Terry.

Hey Rog,

You must know that old adage that we read what we want to see...right...

Well, I read 'Nero ProductSetup' in your post, but have just noticed that it actually reads 'Nero ProfuctSetup'...a Freudian slip perhaps, or are you trying to tell us something :) :)

Terry.

Haha! Definitely a Freudian slip on my part.....

I'm surprised I got away with that. The profanity filter on here is usually quite zealous - doesn't like the word s-c-r-e-w unless you disguise it. I can't think why. Filth is in the mind of the beholder....

ProductSetup is also in your Windows start menu, even if you don't use StartSmart.

Rog.

Hi PumaUK,

Not there for me, but remember what I said about rejecting most of Nero's installs.

No problem for me and think it's good that some folk might benefit from both yours and Rog's input :)

I think the main reason for this update is to support SecureDisk, which is now a feature of the latest LG drives, and has been implemented in cooperation with Nero.

It sounds as though it's rather more use than LightScribe, because apart from allowing high-security password protection (etc.) it saves redundant information to spare space on the disk, which (they say) gives you much better data integrity and much increases the likelihood that you can recover your data intact from a failing or damaged disk. This is not at the expense of backward compatibility with non-SecureDisk drives.

You need Nero 7 or 8. If you want to know more, load the main Nero Burning ROM and switch it to Nero Express, or just load as Nero Express. You do need the latest version though.

Rog.

I think SecurDisk is really nothing useful.
That is also backed by some reviews I've read... :(

I suppose it depends on whether it works as well as the 'inventors' would have you believe. Of course I have no experience of that, but I'm sure we'll find out in time. It's brand new and relatively untried at the moment.

If it does make disks more reliable, that would be a step in the right direction, because we've all had experience of recorded CDs and DVDs which have gone flaky over time. I'll look it up for myself and see what others have to say. I'm not too enthusiastic about the password side of things, because good encryption has been around for some time in other forms.

I always thought Lightscribe was a solution without a problem - if there were not cheapish inkjets around which made an excellent job of printing direct onto a suitable disk, then maybe, otherwise too slow and too expensive and mono... However, SecureDisk doesn't require specialist media, so a possible bonus with no extra charge. I guess they get their income from a small charge coming back from LG, although the SecureDisk drives seem cheap enough...

Hi Rog,

well, perfectly right what you wrote.
The problem always begins when cheap media comes into play...
Also, so far only Nero can make use of SecurDisc.

Many thanks Puma :)

But, Guys, be sure to read all the preceeding posts re this update!

It's still a hefty download, but not as bad as opting for the whole thing.

Hi Chef,

You can say that again :)

Cheers.
