I want to get an external DVD burner for my ultraportable laptop and would like to get one that could be reflashed for region-free playing.
My local Fry's is selling:
Pioneer DVR-X122 ($100)
Memorex MRX-530L ($100)
HP dvd1040e ($110)
LG GSA-E50L ($120)
I've searched for all of these on the forums here and not found anything. Is it possible to reflash a USB DVD drive like this? Any of these you would recommend, or recommend shopping elsewhere? I need to get the drive by the end of 2007, so if I buy elsewhere I will have to ship it here quickly.

Hi chef, sorry, I just wanted to know if any of these would be easy to get firmware for in the future and therefore avoid further firmware requests.

does anybody know if LG GSA-E50L is flashable to region free?
I would like to get hold of this drive but before I do it would be great to make it region free.
Also if this drive is not, does anybody know where I can get an external drive that is and also does the place deliver to the UK.
Please can anybody help.

pioneer listed in this thread, any liteon can easily be made rpc1, if you get a good USB enclosure, then you can buy NEC, Liteon,Pioneer,LG drives and connect them up, and make RPC1
