On my Macbook Pro, the UJ-846 FQ3T RPC1 firmware has worked perfectly. Thanks a lot for this incredible job that we were all so desperate about !
May 2008 bring many other such news (Zone free Blu-Ray drives on Macs ? ).

Thank so much.
As many other people on this board, I upgraded to Leopard and THEN I figured out that a patched firmware existed for my drive (FM0S), on the brand new iMac Alu 20".
So...
I took my USB Portable Hard DISK. partitionned it in order to creat a macOSx partition, bootable of course. (GID menu).
I installed Tiger on it. It's slow... but....
I booted on this Usb HD, applyied the patch....
and.....
DVD Info X v1.0.2, by xvi ( xvi@rpc1.org)
WARNING --- DVD Info X will only list DVD drives that have some WRITE
capabilities, like combos, DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc...
DVD-ROM-only drives will NOT be listed.
WARNING --- You also must eject any inserted medium to list the drive.
Vendor: MATSHITA
Model: DVD-R UJ-85J
Firmware: FM0S
RPC-1 (region free)
yesssssssss !!!!
Works perfectly with the DVD application of Leopard (the change count always stay at 5), and obviously with VLC.
You guys Rock !!!!!

Used Benn11's firmware and irnmongoose's instructions and it worked perfectly on my PBPro 2.2 and although the DVD Info X said region fix was permanent it works fine now - DVD player fine and VLC as well

I'll do my best to respond usefully. I have no recollection of ever flashing the Sony AW-G170A. Given all the hours I have put into this project in the last few weeks, it strikes me as very unlikely I could have done it without noticing or remembering, and, for the same reasons, I doubt I did it in the past. I had once, in 2004, used Region X v.1.old and I had used one of NIL's tools (I think -- it was a guy in Singapore) to make the Matshita UJ-811 (I think) that came in my 1GHz PowerBook G4. I sold that in 2005, and did not retain the software (Region X, DVD Info X).
Quote: _chef_
Just NORMAL, tools like "RegionX" fake the regioncode/setting, that is their purpose. RegionX or similar is running in the background, or not?! I don't remember what was running in the background, but when I came back to this thread today, I made sure I was freshly rebooted with nothing else running. The output from DVD Info X was unchanged (see below). Quote: PumaUK
either software, or it was already RPC1, Ben's firmware could not of flashed this drive. if you use DVDINFO, if someone has flashed it to RPC1, then it may include liggy's name in the firmware extra info tab I can't find such a tab. Do you mean DVD Info X when you ask about DVDINFO? I looked in System Profiler as well. Code: Terminal: drutil info was not helpful, and could see only two of the 3 drives: the Matshita UJ-85J on the PATA bus, the LG HL-DT-ST GSA-H62N on the PCIslot3/ExpressCard34 bus by SATA, but not the Sony AW-G170A on USB2. Quote: DVD Info X v1.0.2, by xvi ( xvi@rpc1.org) WARNING --- DVD Info X will only list DVD drives that have some WRITE capabilities, like combos, DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc... DVD-ROM-only drives will NOT be listed. WARNING --- You also must eject any inserted medium to list the drive. Vendor: SONY Model: DVD RW AW-G170A Firmware: 1.71 RPC-1 (region free)
And still more of a puzzle, when I put a region 2 DVD in the Sony, nothing happens. No request for region code change, the disk does not mount, &c. If, however, before I but the disk in the Sony, I run Region X (v1.2) and choose region 2, I can mount and play the disc in the Sony or in the Matshita. It seems that if there are more than one RPC1 drives, Region X changes them all at once. I don't want to pester dvi, but I discovered this feature does not seem to be in the documentation that comes with Region X v1.2, because I read it.
The Sony drive was in a cardboard box with the Emprex brand on it, but the metal outer case of the drive itself declares it to be Sony, with the same designation I and DVD Info X noted above.
So, Emprex boxed it that way, or I need to get my temporal lobes checked. I've patched two Matshita and one Pioneer in the last two weeks, but zero Sonys. I agree it seems extremely unlikely that DVRFlash could have done it --- I just can't explain how it was done.

Search is your friend, especially in these forums.
Quote: I followed what I understood from your instructions and downloaded the "Update KBVB Region Free"... But as you can see, my firmware revision is "KBV9", not "KBVB"... Do I proceed anyways, or is there a "KBV9" Update?
Here's what ben11 wrote on Sep 28, 2007 9:31 pm: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=42953&highlight=KBV9Quote: HAC1 or HAE4 use HAEA HBE4 use HBEA KBV9 use KBVB KCV9 use KCVB
I would probably try it . . . but I'd probably learn more first - I'm a beginner, too.

I've got a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.1 with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-857D rev. KCVB.
I've downloaded the corresponding bit of firmware but when I open it and try to run it the icon simply flashes in my dock before disappearing. I've done a bit of looking around and it sounds like this is a Leopard compatibility issue with the Flasher app, is this correct?
Also, and more importantly to me, is there going to be an update to the app so that those of us who didn't know about this until we bought Leopard can flash our firmware?

Why does anyone come here and posts the same question again and again?
Because we do a search and nothing comes up so we decide to post in the most relevant section? I mean it's not like I created a whole new thread here.
Thanks CH-Vox for the reply.

Not to worry, basically the answers are there in the threads, but some members cannot be bothered, and simply ask the same questions over and over again.

ben11, fantastic, you are a genius!
I've been trying to play legally purchased DVDs on my treacherous MacBook Pro *shita UJ-85J for a long time, and finally your RPC-1 firmware cured it.
Of course I had to disable DVD Player (it still asked for region changes) and just use VLC. Tragically this means I no longer have to watch the UOP crippled adverts at the beginning of DVDs either. Oh well.
Rich.

Rich,
Actually, you don't have to disable DVD Player.
Now that your MacBook is region-free, you can change the regions as often as you want. Yes, you still have to change the regions every time you insert a DVD from a different region, but the number of changes is unlimited! Region X 1.2 is your tool for that.

It is possible to run the firmware update under leopard (without fooling around with tiger partitions etc) - you have to fool the updater that it's running under previous O/S.
see thread:
http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?p=210022#210022
i've tried it and it works - the drive is now listed as rpc-1

Then please contact Apple!
You have used their update and that is why you should ask them first.

Any luck with UJ-857E with rev ZF1E? It seems all the new Penryn based macbooks and macbook Pros I've seen have these drives.
