The UJ-85J FBZ8 patch seems to work fine on my Santarosa MBP.
After reboot DVDInfo-X reports RPC-1.
Strangely the drive initially appears to be set to Region 1 after applying the patch. DVD-Player failed to change the region to 2 after inserting a Region 2 disc. I had to delete com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist to make DVDPlayer accept the region change.

RegionX 1.1.3 resets the count properly.

I didn't try burning any discs yet but if I encounter anything weird I'll report.

Thanks a LOT ben11!!!

cheers
peter

Hello Ben11,

Just wanted to let you know I noticed the above firmware. It's the one I was waiting on for my iMac, so I was glad to see it come available. Thank you so much for your effort.

Installed no problem on my system, so now I have 3 machines all with the firmwares you patched.

So far so good, will do further tests by using the drive in various ways to see that it works fine. Will post further updates.

Thanks once again.

Hello,

I have a number of patched Apple firmwares for Matshita drives:

UJ-825 firmware revision "DAM5"
UJ-835E firmware revision "GAND"
UJ-835F firmware revision "GEND"
UJ-835F firmware revision "GFND"
UJ-835F firmware revision "GGND"

as used in various PPC macs.

The only difference between the patched and the normal firmware are
changes for RPC1 (region free) operation.

I've previously posted some other patches for the UJ-857/857D
(revisions HAEA, HBEA, KBVB, KCVB), usually used in the Intel based
Macbooks, in the thread http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=38176

Download links:

http://rapidshare.com/files/51214875/UJ ... 5.zip.html
http://rapidshare.com/files/51215806/UJ ... D.zip.html
http://rapidshare.com/files/51216440/UJ ... D.zip.html
http://rapidshare.com/files/51216900/UJ ... D.zip.html
http://rapidshare.com/files/51217422/UJ ... D.zip.html

The zip archives contain a "README!" and two updater applications.
One to flash the patched and another that can restore the original
firmware to the drive.

Usual caution about firmware updates: They do have the capacity
to go wrong and leave your drive useless. Use at your own risk!

In addition the above are new and due to lack of the exact
hardware to test all cases I have not been able to exercise
each one. Having said that I do believe they are fine.

I'm not connected with rpc1.org itself, I'm only a regular forum
user who had success in patching the drive in my own Mac and
learned a certain amount of details of the Matshita firmware in the
process.

I think it would be helpful for the community if anyone who does
try these would consider posting some feedback.

hi ben11,
flashing the drive worked smoothly, dvd-player does work on a region-free basis now.
my specs :
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E
Firmware Revision: ZA0E.
this is the first time in this post that this specific drive on a macbook pro santa rosa 2,2 ghz (july 2007) has been reported as successfully flashed.
thanks a lot, ben11 !

After waiting a few weeks, I have finally flashed the DVD reader on my MacBook Pro, and DVD Info X says that it has worked.

As a foreign language teacher who regularly uses DVDs from regions 1 and 2, having a region-free computer is an ENORMOUS benefit to both me and my students!

Please accept my deepest gratitude Ben 11! And thanks also to everyone who contributes to making this site indispensable!

Hi all I have a

MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-833S 1.51 61204MKMEEC05008749
Drive (Hardware) Region: 2

It is the default OEM drive in Panasonic Let's Note CF-Y7 laptops.
If there is any way I can provide a firmware dump to the good chaps who have been modding the firmware, please let me know.

Thanks

Hi ben11,

You work is sheer genius.

My MBP 15 in. w/ UJ-857D and KCV9 firmware is now Region-free!

First I had to run SuperDriveFWUpdate ver. 2.1 (and hold my breath that Apple wouldn't break something). This updated my firmware up to KCVB. From here, I used your region-free firmware updater and DVD Info X now reports that I am the newest member of the RPC-1 community!

Region X now works, and the burner still burns.

You rule!

hi there everyone!

I've downloaded the HAEA patch for the UJ857 and applied it. My region was previously set to Region 1.

I've tried Region X, and it says "settings are corrupted or in a newer format".

When I insert a region 4 DVD, DVD player tells me I gotta change the region code in order to play it. I choose to change it, and it says it was changed successfully. However, it latter says that there's no support for such media.

I eject the dvd and insert it again, and it again asks me if i want to change to region 4!

DVDinfo x says the drive is RPC1, but is this a media-related issue or something went wrong?

Cheers,

Francis

I wish I had found this earlier - now running Leopard and it's not working. Is there any chance a Leopard update will come soon........?

Or are there ways to go around this the Leopard issue? - I need to unlock a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J Fav1 drive.

Thanks for your help!!
