Toshiba SD-R9012, cant read 52x

Hi, apologies in advance, but I am a newbie and am confused by 'firmware' issues!

I have an IBM Thinkpad T41 with a Toshiba SD-R9012 combo installed. The firmware is showing as 1121. Most cd's are now 52x speed, but if I burn on to a 52x CD-R or RW, I cannot read it and it shows up in My Computer as either non-existent, or totally full (via properties) but doesnt show me what is on the cd or read it.

It works fine with 48x, but they are now not available to buy!

I have updated the bios on the Thinkpad and looked at the firmware option but not sure there is anything that would solve the problem. If anyone can offer advice I would be most grateful.

have you burned lower than the 52x on them? does that work
