I have Toshiba Satellite A-10with Toshiba DVD -Rom SD- R6012. Suddenly it has stopped recognising data DVDs which were previously being read. The same DVDs are working fine on another notebook Toshiba M-50. I do not get any error message on loading the DVD. The light in the drive keeps on blinking for a while and then then becomes static(orange). Trobleshooting tells me to update windows. But windows update do not show any required updates. The Cds are functioning fine.
Please guide me regarding the problem.

Try cleaning the drive, this might help.

I would try with a DRY cleaning method (CD/DVD) first.

Your drive is no DVD-ROM and no dvd burner but a combo!

A combo drive is really a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM drive combined.
There is also no way to make it burn DVDs.

At last my Toshiba A10 satellite drive has started recognising DVDs . But now a new problem has arisen. Now it is neither writing CDs nor DVDs. Previously it was writing both. I have Toshiba DVD-ROM SD- R6012 1334.
While writing CDs the process of writing is finished and disc ejected but when this supposedly written CD is inserted in drive it turns out to be blank CD. While writing DVDs the writing is completed till 100% but drive hangs at the finalising steps. Please advise the corrective measures.

I couldnot understand what you meant by trying other media . Do you mean the software being used for writing be changed. I tried Zilla and Nero besides Drag n Drop (Digi On, Easy systems) that came pre installed.

Avoid drag'n'drop and Packet Writing software!

Burn with verify enabled and unistall Alcohol if it is installed.

Thanks for clarifying, Puma!

TECHNICAL, more than one installed burnersoftwares can cause problems (some softwares replace ASPI driver by their own! ) so install only one, especially actual trial release of NERO [ http://www.nero.com ] and check burn project again.

hey there!!
hope you guys are having a great day :) anyway i have a problem with my NEC versa e680 laptop and as i was researching it through the net i found that technical had exactly the same problem as me! i have a toshiba dvd-rom sd-R6012 and in the middle of playing a dvd 2 nights ago it stopped, and now it won't play dvds of any kind (they aren't scratched or dirty) but they will play CDs. And yes, you can hear it whirring around for a bit but the orange light becomes static and the computer recognizes nothing in the drive. if someone could please help me it would greatly greatly be appreciated!!

hey thanks for your reply! yes i've tried cleaning the drive as it said in a previous post, and umm what do you mean by region of the drive?? do you mean like the dvd region? if that's it then it's region 4 (because i live in new zealand) and i haven't changed it (it still says i have 3 changes left). i was wondering how technical got his dvd-rom to play dvds again, i don't really mind if it doesn't burn dvds but it would be really good if it could read them again! lol is there a specific driver i should install? i tried installing firmware driver 1034 for it but after downloading it i tried to install it but it says "drive not found" or "e:// not accessible". lol so confusing!

Do not just downloading and running something if you don't have a clue which package to use....

hey thanks for ur reply :D as for the driver, i went onto the toshiba website and found that that was the correct driver to download for my specific dvd-rom, and it didn't install so (for now) it hasn't had had effect on my system. i sent TECHNICAL a private message, do you think it could be a waiting game? technical said in an earlier post that "it finally started reading dvds again" so maybe i just have to wait a little bit?? lol but i think i'm starting to sound more hopeful about the prospect than the reality lol!! would you have any other tips for me that may help me in any way?? anything would be greatly appreciated!!

You are probably still confused about the difference of FIRMWARE and DRIVERS.
DRIVERS are working on the OS area to support the drive, FIRMWARE is drive specific and holds basic routines so the drive can work at all.
