Review of Pioneer's DVR-110 with 1.08 firmware. Not too good and it uses the NEC chip.

Sorry, it's not!

Today, we will compare the DVR-110D from Pioneer to Plextor's PX-740A along with drives from our Summer 2004 DVDR roundup to see how it matches up.

And to be honest, reviews by anandtech have not been described as "reliable" by some readers. But it's up to you to choose finally and hopefully upgrade to firmware 1.17 first!

Well... Even if the DVR-110 isn't that good of a drive, it's still is Pioneer and currently the ONLY drive on the market with it's capabilities

Anyways, got my drive today BLACK and also bought a SAMSUNG drive for fun. Will be testing both drives, but I expect the SAMSUNG to be [*Profanity*], like always.... ha ha

My dads 110 out of the box had no rip lock. With firmware 1.08 and 1.17 he rips up to 14x on some discs.

Is he the only one?

yep, after I upgraded mine to V1.17 (Came with V1.08, but didn't really do anything to it) and it's without riplock!

Code:
I 18:27:29 Source Device: [4:0:0] PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-110D 1.17 (F:) (ATA)
...
I 18:32:42 Operation Successfully Completed! - Duration: 00:05:08
I 18:32:42 Average Read Rate: 12,898 KB/s (9.3x) - Maximum Read Rate: 18,251 KB/s (13.2x)

wicked so this is the trend! Let us hope all future firmware upgrades are the same and they don't decide to lock it in the future. Gradius has done an RPC-1 firmware as well for this drive but we have no means of flashing it just yet. Seeming great so far. All we need now is a third party manufacturer to come out with a bitsetting firmware for SL media and we are laughing!

Throw in the option to flash the 1.22 firmware of the 110 and I'll REALLY be happy!

I suppose it doesn't work for the 110D...

the firmware isn't actually available, its just whats on the drive when released, remains to be seen if the 110D can be flashed into one, the dvdram feature may scupper that

I have looked at the link and noticed that the two drives appear to be identical. :)

There may be a possibility if there is a way to flash the 110 firmware to the 110d. :?

Wheather this works or not will no doubt be tried when or if there is a way to flash the drive. 8-)

Others with a greater understanding of the internals of the drives should be able to answer that.

It's too early to expect that now.

The drive (110) has to be really available.
It will require a flasher supporting both drives.
A 110 firmware has to be released...
