I must apologise for recent downtime which was due to circumstances beyond our control. Our beloved >NIL: who designed the system was away on holiday at the time but soon got out of retirement to work over the bank holiday weekend to fix it.
I will not go into too much detail as to the problem but it was a failure in the boot loader & I am sure someone else will fill in the details.
Lets all give our thanks to =D> >NIL: =D>

:)

Details for those that care about these things:
The problems indeed stemmed from a boot-loader (LILO) issue. After testing integrity of the software RAID array (yah...software. :( ) and the actual physical disks/controller, we came to the conclusion that the firmware repository was safe. :). An fsck was run, for those that fear file-structure/inode damage. Long story short, a disk flip here, a reinstalled LILO-strap there, and its all happening again. ^_^

Darn, I was beginning to think that Linux was perfect.
