Hello anybody,

I would like to download a newer firmware to my CDD5263 Philips Combo drive but I haven't found anything on the web. My actual firmware is UH89 and I have heard something about UH9A or maybe something newer. Do you know, where to download some ? By the way, the drive is istalled in my HP nx9020 notebook and on the HP website there is absolutelly nothing. I have found only manual on DELL website.

Same here. looking for newer firmware for above drive.
My drive seem to be sensitive to media type especially those +R format.

It seems there're a lot of versions: I have the same unit with UD91 revision,
and it's shipped into a Dell Latitude 505.

Some firmware to make it free-zone would be nice...

so far out of luck. I could not find any new firmware for it.

Before a patch can be made you need several things, you need a flasher, a firmware binary, and some idea what kind of chipset is used in the drive.

You could post some pictures of the drives internals, if the chipset is one for which a flash tool or downloader exists you can use that to get a copy of the current firmware.

You can pester Philips or the maker of your PC for a firmware update, especially if there is some specific fault with the current version.

Patches don't happen by magic, those who own the drives and are therefore invested in getting some sort of resolution need to obtain some of the basic parts.

I tried backing up the firmware with mktflash, no luck. Dell has an automated e-mail system explaining how good RPC is, Philips does not have anything related to this drive.

Someone can sugest another flasher to try?

MediaTek's 1616... that's a chipset that's been around since 2003 (used in the 48161H)... hmm. I wonder why the MtkFlash backup didn't work (since the latest 1.83c version of MtkFlash is fairly new). What version of MtkFlash did you try? I'd suggest trying 1.83c and then if that doesn't work, maybe one of the older versions. Also, if it doesn't work, could you describe what it does (error message, etc.)

Something else that might work is to hold the eject button down for a few seconds when the computer is first powering up, as that's been known to enable MtkFlash access in certain other Mtk-based drives, so there's an off-chance that it might help here if nothing else works.

My mistake,

Sometimes I take shortcuts and if does not work, I just give up... for a while.

So: i booted in dos and run MtkFlash 1.55; it does not recognize the flash memory, but it saves the .bin

Tried MtkFlash183c, flash memory is

MXIC(MX29LV004B)(+3.3V), and produced the same bin as 1.55 (hattip code2^16 ) )

So now I'm the proud owner of a bin image... what's next? I don't want to pester anyone (aka The Brothers ) with e-mails if they don't say so.

what command are you using to flash the drive?

I did not flash it, I just saved the firmware with

mtkflash # r /b /m putyourfilenamehere.bin

# in my case is 3, CDROM master on second IDE.

to flash it (after an open firmware is made...) you could use

mtkflash # w /b /m openfirmware.bin

Having a .BIN is a start. There are a number of patchers here who can patch MediaTek-based drives for RPC1 (TDB, etna, myself, and probably others). So if you zip up the firmware and post it in this thread (click the "Add an Attachment" button when you post), then anyone who's interested in patching it could get it and give it a shot.

Thanks for e-mailing me the firmware. Turns out that your Philips drive is actually a "QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242C" (SBW242U) (according to the internal identification), firmware version identifies as UD91.

Edit2: DONE !!! Using Etna's autopatcher for SBW242 I reflashed my unit and DriveInfo tool reported it as without region protection. Just GREAT. I will have to wait to return home at the end of September to test various DVD's.

I tried etna's autopatcher (AUTOQSI2 Beta4) and it seemed to work at first. Both Drive Region Info V2.2 and DiscInfo v1.55 report that there was no lock.

However, when loading up a dvd (or checking in device manager) a region was still set and the count was at 1 (but was at 5 before I started). Setting the region decremented the count to 0 and set the region. At this point I could not set it again.

I reflashed back to the original bin (thank goodness for backups), and the region was set at what I just set it to and the count was 4. Region lock also returned, of course.

Perhaps this Philips firmware is slightly different from the factory QSI drive.

I would like flash my firmware, but I need to hear some more testimonials before I try it out. This guy says it didn't work? Does anyone have any success stories for the drive in question?

O.K for those who asked for more testimonials if this drive, Philips CDD5263 can be flashed, here is a horror story with a happy ending from me....

A colleague of mine wanted his Combo drive to be set to RPC-1. It resides on a Dell Inspiron XPS (1st Gen) Laptop. The drive identifies itself as Philips CDD5263 firmware U91 when used Disc Info and has region protection. It is residing in a modular removable drive bay, the chipset on it was Media Tek, so it was reasonable to assume MTKFlash tool should work on this drive?

First step was to naturally back up the original .bin file using MTKFlash, we tried both 1.65 and 1.83c, it turned up unsucessful perhaps we missed something in the command line or what I really don't know, however found on this site the original Philips_CDD5263 .bin file in the threads, so no sweat there as we have somekind of backup .bin file anyway.

Next proceeded using the Etna's Autoqsi2 to autopatch the firmware, the drive now identifies itself as QSI SBW242C U91 but it would not eject at all, sort of semi-dead??.

Then out of desperation we tried using the QSI SBW242R1 windows patcher, it came up "firmware flash failed", reboot PC. When we did, the drive was completely dead wasn't even identifiable as Master on Secondary IDE, somehow the firmware flash above forced the drive to become Slave on Secondary IDE wasn't visible to Bios nor XP. The Laptop can't even boot up with the Drive sitting connected inside the modular bay, it was bad, we fried the drive. I guess maybe??

So went back to the threads here at www.rpc1.org read up some more and downloaded couple of .bin files and went back for a second attempt...

Created Bootdisk with MTKFlash 1.83c, at prompt

a:> mtkflash E
...chip set erased....what the heck drive was fried anyway, so anything goes yeah??

then
a:> mtkflash 3 w /m CDD5263.bin (used the original Philips_CDD5263.bin firmware found at this site!!)

The drive went through 8 banks of flashing the memory or so, and came up working just fine. Reboot PC and drive now Identifies itself as Philips CDD5263 with RPC-2 region protection and all settings as original or default from Dell

next day, still not satisfied that the drive actually beat us to it, we tried this final attempt to make it RPC-1...

a:> mtkflash 3 r /m backup.bin (to make sure we have all the orginal settings on a back up disc), it backed up just fine.

then

a:> mtkflash 3 w /m U301.bin (I found a U301.bin file at this site which is not yet patched to RPC-1) the process went just fine, the drive came up and identified itself now as QSI SBW242U U301 with RPC-2 when checked with DVDInfo. It worked just fine burning CD and playing DVD but it was still a Region Locked drive.

The next step was to make it an RPC-1 drive obviously and it was obvious to use the Windows QSI Flashing tool SBW242R1 with 242U301.ROM file. Did that flash process and it completed sucessfully.

Tested burning CD etc, worked beautifully. Tested playback of Region 1 and 2 DVD movies with DVD Genie to reset the region counters on the software player and XP, the drive works perfectly, although it identifies itself as QSI SBW242U U301 drive now and no longer the Philips CDD5263 U91 that it was before .

Which file should I flash my drive with? Also reading the other posts I could not find the file 242U301.ROM file. I am a newbie, but if someone could clear up a few things, or give me an easy to understand step by step instructions. It would be greatly appreciated. On a sidenote, I have also downloaded- MtkWinFlash_1536.zip.

I dont suggest to try the autoqsi cd at the moment because this cant store a backup.

If you have a floppy disk drive follow the instructions on my site to made a bootdisk and unpack autoqsi2 to this.

Your drive is a renamed QSI SBW242.

Hello All,

I have a HP Compaq notebook (nx9030) bought from Japan having the combo drive, Philips CDD5263. When I playing some copied DVDs in my notebook, it is getting frozen and the player hangs when the movie nears to the end. But these DVDs are working perfectly on my desktop. Will this problem be corrected by flashing my drive by using the firmware posted in this forum?. Someone please comment on this....
