philco, your comment has been moved to the anything you like section in this thread. If you want to express your views on that matter, post a reply in this new thread.
Master Goo, because it followed philco's your post had to be split as well, and is now appearing in it's own thread here.
ukendt's reply above is a reply to Master Goo's post.

Another advantage of bitsetting (in addition to the enhanced compatibility on older devices): The reading performance is enormously improved. Take the new Toshiba SD-M 1912 DVD-Rom for example: It supports DVD+ and DVD- officially. Unfortunately, the reading speed is limited to 6x max on these discs. But DVD+Rs with DVD-Rom booktype are read @ full speed.
For most users, bitsetting is a useful and interesting feature. Even users who do not need it at all don't have a disadvantage when the drives supports this additional feature.
I understand Nil's view on this matter - I am annoyed by the drive manufacturers' lack of support.
NEC is still the worst. They have released only 1 (!) single firmware update for the ND-2500. And all media which are not supported by the firmware are written @2,4x/2x.
My question is: How is the media support of the Piodata firmware? How fast can media be recorded if they are not supported by the firmware?

has anyone tried DVDShrink...it always has "Booktype DVD-Rom" checked whenever I burn...does it automatically Booktype the DVD...it may only have that because Im burning on DVD-R...Im just wondering if it is a thing in the drive or in software...(meaning if the drive says it doesnt support it, then the software wont allow it, but if the software forced the drive to do it, if the drive would physically do it or not) I dont have DL media to test...and why isnt there any -R DL media? All I see are +R...I know that prolly seems a newbie question...just trying to understand.

DVDShrink has no burning engine.
It uses Nero or DVDDecrypter, depending on your settings.

I know its risky but bought some + disks that my xbox dont like...
Is it possible to flash back to 108 firmware from the PIODATA firmware?

Yes it is completely possible to flash back. Out of the people who have flashed to the piodata firmware not one has reported any problems with it so you may be lucky. Do me/us a favour and tell me if using that firmware has made the discs useable on your xbox. Thanks.

Booktype Bitsetting is only for DVD+R disks. The normal Pioneer firmware does sets the booktype to DVD+R for single layer DVD+R's. The PIODATA firmware sets the booktype to DVD-ROM for single layer DVD+R's. For Dual layer DVD+R's, both firmwares set the booktype to DVD-ROM. It doesn't matter what burning software is used, the firmware will always set the booktype according to this description.
DL DVD-R does not exist yet outside the lab. The pioneer 109 will probably have support for it, and the pioneer 108 probably won't ever get support for it.
If you are burning DVD-R there is no problems with booktype.

Yes, it is completely possible to flash back and forth between the PIODATA and pioneer firmwares. I wouldn't do it every day though, as flashing the firmware kernel is not risk free.

I know people who have seen DVD-R DL outside lab. It means retail (or perhaps OEM first) release is close.

Read the sentence again. All DVD's have a booktype. The regular pioneer firmware sets the booktype for DVD+R disks to DVD+R (not DVD-ROM, like the piodata firmware)

I'm not even going to try to clean up this mess. There shouldn't be any replies on an FAQ thread anyways.
Toge, you can contact me if you want to update your original post on this thread.
